The center was founded by Dr. Joni Shimp, DVM, a master falconer and active conservationist. Cape Fear Raptor Center is a NC Non-Profit Corporation with 501c3 status. Swallow-tailed kites (Elanoides forticatus)are back in Willard, NC for the second year. These amazing raptors hunt “on the wing”, catching and eating prey while they fly. They rarely eat prey while perched. They return to the deep south (FL, VA coast to MS coast) and Central America to breed but migrate every year to mid-South America. They maneuver like little fighter jets! Keep an eye out for them in the local area!

Dr. Joni performed a complicated surgery on this Bald Eagle Friday night. He had ingested a hook and swivel and his only chance was surgery. If you would like to help this eagle's recovery you can check out his fundraiser and the rest of his story here:

We hope everyone had a great Superb-Owl weekend. If you'd like a superb raptor ambassador to make an educational appearance at your next event, meeting, party or gathering, contact us to schedule!
This beautiful Bald Eagle needs a little community help. She was rescued by a Skywatch Bird rescue first responder after being reported as grounded and unable to fly.
A thorough exam and x-rays shows she had ingested a hook, which pierced through her esophagus and caused further damage inside her body.
Because eagles scavenge, and are exposed to lead from tackle and ammunition, involved she needed a lead test to determine if lead treatment should be included in care.
Unfortunately our lead machine is in need of replacement. Lead machines do incredibly important work. Every single eagle, osprey, vulture, and many other birds that arrive for care receive a lead test to provide life saving information on admission.
Our lead machine has worked hard for many years, but now we need a new one to continue to help birds like this Eagle. Any help towards this item is very much appreciated! For the lead machine, with components, and related test costs we need to raise about $4000 -$4500.
The Eagle, dubbed Stella, received excellent care from Dr. Joni, but due to her extensive injury, infection, and suffering, she was humanely euthanized. Please help remember Stella and help other Eagles like her by sharing this and donating.

HPAI is a very contagious and deadly virus that can also affect raptors. It also causes huge economic losses to the Poultry and Turkey industry if it gets in their flocks.
If you own poultry, please institute STRICT biosecurity at your home. For more information see
https://www.ncagr.gov/avianflu/Small-Flock-info.htm
NCDA&CS Veterinary Division strongly recommends to keep all poultry indoors, including organic/free-range flocks, for at least 30 days from today. Allowing these flocks to have access to outdoors during this time would put them at increased risk of contracting High Path Avian Influenza. NCDA&CS will continue to monitor this disease threat and this recommended time period may be extended.
Yesterday, we received two reports of more hunter-harvested wild waterfowl of mixed species (American Widgeon, Mallard, Gadwall, Northern Pintail and Northern Shoveler) with preliminary results detecting H5 Eurasian High Path Avian Influenza in several birds. All of these birds were sampled on Jan. 8, 2022. These results identified 3 more positive waterfowl that originated in the same location in Hyde county as our original isolation and 34 more positive waterfowl originating from a single location in Pamlico county.

We are raising money to replace two freezers, a refrigerator and a washer that we have recently lost. Our appliances work very hard because of the volume of food that we need to store and the care work related for the nearly 3000 patients a year. We lost 2 fish freezers which is an especially big problem because we have to store several hundred pounds of fish at all times to be able to handle the needs of the many fish eating patients and residents.
We hope you can join us in sharing our fundraiser and supporting it so that we may replace these broken appliances, and So we can provide our best for the birds who need our help.
Thank your for your support & pls share.

Christmas Fundraiser!
We have exiting news! A member of the fastest animals on earth is joining our Raptor Ambassador Team! This beautiful Peregrine Falcon was found malnourished and brought in for care. Unfortunately deemed non-releasable due to having an old wrist injury, we decided to open our doors to allow him Sanctuary instead of facing euthanasia. He will play an important role in our efforts to spread Conservation Education to the public, and will be viewable by visitors!
Because of the nature of the species we need to raise funds for his specially built enclosure. Can you please help us reach that goal with a Christmas donation? This new member of the team, named Jasper, is also available for Christmas Sponsorhip! (Email:[email protected] for more info)

Owls Could Kill Over 1000 Mice a Year Each if We Stopped Killing Them With Rodenticide
In one of man’s most counterproductive efforts, we are killing the predators of our pests. Owls are nature’s best rodent control, here’s how to make them feel at home in your yard. Owls can serve as all-natural pest control for American farmers and homeowners alike, if we welcome them onto our...
This Barred Owl that was recently admitted with fishhook injuries and line & tackle wrapped around her wing, has recovered successfully and have been released back to the area where she came from.
Book your program today! If u would like a great educational program for your group, contact us for Fall scheduling! We offer both off-site and on-site programs featuring a wide variety of educational raptor ambassadors to choose from. Message us for more info at: [email protected] and put "Cape fear raptor program" in the subject line.
This poor Barred Owl is very lucky to have been found. She has a hook in her flesh, along with fishing line, sinker and bobber wrapped around her wing.
We are looking for volunteers! If you are interested in joining the team for the season to do something enriching, and important for Raptor conservation, please visit www.skywatchbirdrescue.org for information and to fill out an application form. We are specifically looking for volunteers on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Friday's, and Saturday's, to help care for and feed our wide variety of raptors on site. Raptor caretakers also have the possibility/opportunity to learn Raptor handling for events.
One of the many exciting things SkyWatch is working on behind the scenes right now, is to have the amazing American Bald Eagles from Cape Fear Raptor center, on public display!
One of the tasks we need help with right now is laying down gravel in their soon-to-be enclosure we're preparing for them. We are looking for strong backs & arms willing to help. Laying down gravel consists of shoveling the gravel into a wagon from a large mound, dragging the wagon over to the enclosure, dumping it out and spreading it with a rake.
If anyone is willing to come help out, even just for an hour or two, please message us. Perhaps you need some community service hours? or just want a fun way to work out?, let us know if u can help. Moving gravel is a physically taxing job, please no kids, it's heavy work.
Please share! Thank You.
As u consider your gift giving this season, please consider an impactful and meaningful gift for that special someone, symbolically giving them one of these birds. All these beautiful Educational Ambassadors are in need of sponsors. Sponsorship comes with special perks and it makes a wonderful gift! PM us for more info.
My name is Sky. I'm a Bald Eagle. When I was just a chick my sibling and I were both Admitted to Cape Fear Raptor center for care, unfortunately due to lead poisoning. Our mom brought home a great dinner that night, but she didn't know that it contained lead shot, which made us very ill. Cape fear saved our lives with rehabilitation, and although we finally did recover we were deemed non releasable, so now we have the important job of acting as educational ambassadors to help spread the word to the world about not using things like rodenticide and lead shot, that poison our food sources.
Because of the nature of my species, our housing in captivity, food, and handling equipment gets very expensive. If you're wondering what to give someone this Christmas as a gift, please consider becoming my sponsor! Sponsorship makes a great gift to someone that may be hard to shop for. These gifts are very special and sponsors get super special oopportunities and perks!!
Sponsor me in honor of a loved one this year. Please share.
PM us for sponsorship details.

At CFRC, we are focused on providing medical, surgical, and rehabilitative pre-release services to birds of prey with the highest level of patient care. The center was founded by Dr. Joni Shimp, DVM, a licensed falconers and active conservationist. Cape Fear Raptor Center is a NC Non-Profit Corporation with 501(c)3 status. CFRC has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 5 years and we are very excited to be partnering with the Town of Belville to bring Southeastern NC a year round, family centered, educational facility where you will be able to see our magnificent birds up close and personal. With a 3 year goal, we plan on building our Center, increasing our community involvement in helping teach people the importance of raptors in our local ecosystem. In 2017, our educational ambassadors have seen the faces of over 35,000 adults and kids collectively during educational programs and events. Look around our website and if you have any comments or questions, please feel free to contact us. We hope to see you again! Check back soon...There’s much more to come!
