Attached is an application for cost-share to plant cover crops. This program is being sent out on behalf of the NDASCD and is made possible with funding from the ND Department of Agriculture.

Applications that meet the specifications for cover crop plantings, along with acreage requirements will be funded on a first-come first-served basis until the funding is exhausted. The applications, along with maps, and seed mixes can be sent to [email protected].

You still have another week to apply! One of the ways you could use this funding is to plant grass strips alongside your field windbreaks. That way you can access the trees to do clean up, pruning, etc. without damaging crops. Very often the crop yield isn't that great for 12-15 feet on either side of the tree row.

The District has a 12' grass seeding drill you can rent to plant your grasses for any of these practices!

The first principle of soil health is to keep the soil covered! By keeping crop residue or other plant matter on the soil surface, you protect it from wind and water erosion and moderate the soil temperature. You also provide food for soil biological life, which aids in nutrient cycling.
