Environmental groups oppose wildlife habitat improvement project supported by the Georgia DNR and hunting conservation organizations.

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Forest Service plans to help preserve more than 157,000 acres of forest in North Georgia, with its Foothills Landscape Project, but some local conservationist organizations want more environmental reviews and a more detailed plan to judge.

"It was really a lot of validation for a lot of sportsmen because we have seen steep declines in whitetail deer populations and grouse populations on our national forest lands," he said. "This process and a lot of studies also recognize the lack of active management and how that affects wildlife species' populations." David Whitmire, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Council.

Great news - the Ruffed Grouse Society created a new position to focus specifically on the Southern Appalachians!
