At Tuesday night’s public forum, I was asked what I consider my greatest accomplishments. It was a simple question, but one that honestly made me stop and think.

For nearly 17 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving the public in the Recorder’s Office. Throughout that time, I’ve never really thought about the work I do as something that needed recognition or validation. I’ve simply believed in showing up every day, working hard, and doing my best to help people.

One thing I’ve always taken pride in is making sure every person who walks through our doors feels heard, respected, and helped, even when they may not have originally been looking for our office in the first place.

Many people only step into the courthouse during important or stressful moments in life, and often they’re unsure where to go or what they need. If I can make that experience easier, guide them in the right direction, or simply take the time to listen, then I’ve done my job well. Helping people has become second nature to me, and I truly care about serving our community with patience, precision, and kindness.

But after thinking about that question more deeply, I realized my greatest accomplishment isn’t found in a title or position.

It’s my family.

I am incredibly proud of my children and the people they are becoming. They have kind hearts, strong morals, and a genuine desire to help others. They volunteer, they support their community, and they treat people with compassion and respect. Knowing I had a part in raising them to be that way means more to me than any recognition ever could.

I may not always be the person at every public event, but I have always made it a priority to be present where it matters most, for my family, for my work, and for the people who rely on me every day.

At the end of the day, I believe service comes in many forms. Mine has always been rooted in dedication, reliability, compassion, and quietly doing the work that needs to be done.

And I’m proud of that.
I would love your Vote for Sac County Recorder!

Hi everyone! I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Bethany Burns, and I am running for Sac County Recorder.

I grew up about three miles outside of Lake View and have always been proud to call Sac County home. My parents are Bill and Donna Kolbe of Lake View, and family has always been a big part of who I am. My older brother, BJ Kolbe, now lives in Minnesota with his wife, Sarah (Osborne) Kolbe, and their family.

I attended WLVA High School and graduated in 2000. After high school, I attended Iowa Central Community College, where I earned my Associate of Arts degree in Business. My first job out of college was at Family First Dental, where I worked for five years. I later worked in the business office at Buena Vista University while completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.

While working at Buena Vista University, I saw an opening in the Sac County Recorder’s Office and knew it was the opportunity I had been looking for. It gave me the chance to return home, work in the community I love, and serve the people of Sac County.

My husband, Josh Burns, and I are blessed with three children. Our daughter, Hailey Burns, is currently attending the University of Iowa and working toward her sociology degree. Our son, Bradyn Burns, works in construction in Williamsburg, Iowa, and our youngest daughter, Brooke Burns, is currently a junior at East Sac County High School.

Growing up in a small community taught me the value of hard work, honesty, and treating people with kindness and respect; values I still carry with me every day. In the sixteen years I have worked in the Sac County Recorder’s Office, I have met many wonderful people and truly enjoyed serving the residents of Sac County. I would be honored to continue serving the community that has given so much to me and my family.

I care deeply about this county and the people who make it such a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I look forward to continuing to connect with members of our community and sharing more about myself and my experience in the weeks ahead.
