👀 The City of Sacramento is back from their summer recess this week. We have flagged an item from the 2pm City Council meeting happening tomorrow, Tuesday July 21. This is a continuation from before recess, and is meant to further clarify Sacramento Law Enforcement's collaboration with ICE and other federal agencies. This is on the consent calendar, but there is a pretty good chance it will be pulled for discussion. We're recommending community to show up and hold our elected representatives accountable to ensure the safety of our neighbors!

We have also flagged an item from the Sacramento County Sheriff Community Review Commission happening tomorrow at 6pm.

Join Decarcerate Sacramento in demanding that the City of Sacramento and Sacramento Police Department stop sharing data with ICE!

This Tuesday July 21st at 2pm, the City Council plans to approve $800,000 in federal funding for SacPD’s staffing and participation in the Central California Intelligence Center, a federal data fusion center that collects and shares information with ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI.

Due to strong concerns raised by dozens of community members at the June 23rd meeting, the Council engaged in a discussion with Sacramento Police Department Lieutenant Dave Putnam. He confirmed that, through the CCIC, the sharing of sensitive personally identifiable information of Sacramentans occurs with a host of federal agencies, including ICE and the FBI, as well as an undefined broad set of private entities. The City has no oversight or control over information SacPD shares with the CCIC or where the CCIC shares that information. See the detailed recap in our July 1st update post.

Please speak up against this contract by emailing city council, submitting e-comment, or giving live comment on Tuesday! Due to a new state law, community members will also be able to participate in the City Council meeting remotely for the first time in years. If you cannot attend in person, you can participate and provide live public comment over the phone.

This week, Dr. Flo Cofer joins the cast to discuss the Country Board of Supervisors meeting from last week (in which the Sheriff and DA took a special meeting to push back against budget cuts), and then she and Sky discuss the Anti-Terrorism Grant funding item that was continued by City Council before the recess, and is coming back around tomorrow at the 2pm meeting. Plus, the City has introduced a new Public Participation Hub, so new stuff to have on your radar there as well.

Powerful words from Natasha Minsker, facilitator for the California Anti-Death Penalty coalition, at Tuesday’s board of supervisor’s meeting. Despite the outpouring of community members, advocates, and social-workers, the Board voted 3-2 to restore millions of dollars to the Sacramento Sheriff and DA. An unprecedented move to reopen the budget a month after it was decided. Business owners, the Sac Chamber of Commerce, and other financial interests of course provided the usual narrative that our unhoused neighbors are all criminals who deserve to be rounded up and shipped off to jail. The DA and sheriff paint a bleak picture of Sacramento, where the only solutions available are more cops, and more cells. But we know better. Without the tireless work of community members working with little to no resources to compassionately address the issues our city is facing Sacramento will continue to demonstrate its lack of humanity. The fight isn’t over.

Gabriel is back this week with an update on the budget (didn’t we already do this?!?). Item 65 in the Board of Supervisors’ agenda for their meeting on Tuesday, July 14, is a reconsideration of the budget…what are they reconsidering? More money to cops and prosecutors of course! 🙄 But we have a Decarcerate Sacramento is asking people to show up and let your voices be heard! You can find their tool-kit linked in our bio. New blog post! Sacramento and several other regions across California are currently fighting for public banks at nearly every level of government. A coalition of organizations led by Sacramento Acting Congregations Together, Sacramento Climate Coalition, and others are concentrating their efforts to bring a public bank to Sacramento but so far the City Council and Mayor McCarty seem entirely uninterested in the growing public demand to agendize push the bank forward and take the idea seriously, despite their 2019 approval to explore the concept.
