Next edition of finding photo locations past and present. Today we feature across the street from the State Capitol, State Office Building #1, now known as the State Treasurer’s Office. We match up three photo locations featuring the historic building and explore a bit deeper into Sacramento history. Photos are from the California State Library online search archive.

Matching up the location view of a vintage California State Capitol postcard to present day. There are some differences in the view, although the building is in the same spot! What differences can you find? Postcards are a great way to remember a visit to the State Capitol. Postcards and other modern day souvenirs are found at the lower level gift shop. See you soon!

Yesterday, the National Pony Express Association concluded their 10 day ride from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The original Pony Express transported mail in 1860 & 1861, connecting California to the eastern U.S. and the world. A statue commemorating the historic Pony Express is located in Old Sacramento State Historic Park.

Let’s do a past and present photo location match! In the span of nearly 100 years, what has changed and what has stayed the same? Just like I have done, you can search the California State Library online photo archive and find amazing historic photos. In the beginning I cannot add the actual song clip, so you get to experience my screeching voice instead. Sorry about that.

Learn about the birds in your neighborhood by joining the Capitol Park Bird Talk and Walk on Feb 15 from 9am-10:30am. Meet at 13th and Capitol Avenue in the park grounds at 9:00am for a brief talk before we walk through Capitol Park searching for resident and migratory birds. This will help beginning birders participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count held every February. No bird watching experience is necessary.
