On Saturday, Augst 15, 2026, just after 6:00 a.m., Sacramento Police Officers responded to reports of an unresponsive 11-month-old inside of an apartment in the 500 block Rivergate Way. The juvenile was transported to an area hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, the child was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The child’s father, 27-year-old Emari Thompson of Sacramento, was detained by officers.

Due to the circumstances, Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to take over the investigation. They processed the scene, collected evidence, and interviewed witnesses.

After careful review of this case and consultation with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Thompson was arrested and booked on one count of murder.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after next-of-kin have been notified.

The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding this investigation to contact the dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000. Anonymous tips can also be submitted using the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app.

Last week, the Sacramento Police Department alongside the Elk Grove Police Department, Placer County District Attorney's Office, and the Pleasanton Police Department, served as a partner agency with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) for the Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI) conference.

Scam Alert! We have recently learned of phone scams targeting members of our community in which callers impersonate law enforcement officers, claim the recipient has an outstanding arrest warrant, and spoof legitimate law enforcement phone numbers.

As a reminder, SPD will never demand money, gift cards, or personal information over the phone such as passwords, account numbers, or your social security number.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a member of the Sacramento Police Department, collect their name/badge number and what department they work in. Then call our non-emergency line at 916-808-5471 to verify their identity.

And remember, law enforcement would never call you and ask for money, especially in the form of gift cards. Make sure to verify the identity of who you are speaking to with a local law enforcement agency prior to giving any personal information over the phone. Anyone demanding immediate action, or severe consequences, could be an indication of a scam. And as always, if it seems unusual hang up and report it to your local law enforcement agency. As summer draws to a close and students prepare to return to school, the ​​Sacramento​ Police Department​ reminds all drivers to make safety a top priority during the upcoming back-to-school month by slowing down, following the speed limit and being extra careful driving through school zones.

Yesterday, the Sacramento Police Department was proud to join , , , and the at the "Driving ABCs: Alert for Bicyclists and Children Crossing" campaign and highlighting traffic safety improvements made through the City's Vision Zero Action Plan.

The ​​​Sacramento​ Police Department​​ offers the following tips to stay safe around schools:
· Slow down and follow the speed limit.
· Adhere to school policies and procedures for dropping off and picking up students.
· Stop for school buses. Watch for children rushing to catch the bus or exiting.
· Whenever possible, avoid blocking the crosswalk while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
· For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when permissible and available and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals.

When a school bus has flashing red lights and the stop sign extended, California law (CVC 22454) requires ALL drivers – in BOTH directions – to come to a complete stop and stay stopped until the lights stop flashing and the arm retracts.

Sacramento, Calif. – Before the summer season winds down, the Sacramento Police Department wants everyone to kick off their Labor Day festivities with safety at the forefront. Make the decision that saves lives. Choose safety every time you get behind the wheel and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To help keep our community safe, the Sacramento Police Department will have additional officers on patrol August 19, through September 7, looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The additional efforts to prevent impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

In addition to patrols, the Sacramento Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint August 28, and September 4, from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city of Sacramento.

“Enjoying the last days of summer should be all about fun and that starts with making safe choices before making plans,” Sergeant Anna Mahoney of the Sacramento Police Department said.

“Everyone deserves to get home safely, and it starts with your everyday actions.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,904 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. in 2024 — that’s one person every 44 minutes.

The Sacramento Police Department offers the following tips to Go Safely:

• Plan Ahead: If you know you’ll be drinking, arrange for a designated sober driver, call a ride-sharing service, taxi or use public transportation.
• Buckle Up: Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in the event of a crash.
• Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.
• Follow Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
• Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: With more people enjoying outdoor activities, be extra vigilant and look out for people biking and walking.
• Take Breaks: If you’re traveling long distances, take regular breaks to rest and avoid fatigue.

While drunk driving is a significant traffic safety problem, driving while impaired is not just from alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis products may also impair. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let someone who is sober drive. If you see someone who appears to be driving while impaired, call 9-1-1.

This past Wednesday we had the honor of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Sacramento Police Department Communications Center. The 911 Communications Center originally opened in 2006, as a state-of-the-art facility with an in-house training facility and the ability to support regional emergency communications. It houses our amazing dispatchers and call takers who serve as the first line of response for the Sacramento Police Department and beyond.

Sacramento, Calif. – On August 14, 2026, the Sacramento Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. within the City of Sacramento.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The Sacramento Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

91 years ago today, Chief Erskin Fish lost his life in the line of duty.

On August 11, 1935, Chief Fish was shot to his death. In an almost western style shoot-out, a hail of bullets overcame the Chief as he encountered two burglars fleeing from a bush as he responded to a burglar call from a resident. It was a customary practice for the Chief to respond to calls alone and summon for backup as needed. Chief Fish had been the Chief of the North Sacramento Police Department, which later merged with the Sacramento Police Department, for seven years.
