On Monday, August 24, Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign (Sac PPC), the Sacramento Services Not Sweeps Coalition (SSNSC), and Social Justice PolitiCorps Sacramento County jointly hosted the first of two Monday, Mondays, focusing on public accountability and the impacts of the City of Sacramento and the administration’s policies, proposed budget cuts, and effects on low-income communities. Specifically, the events will focus on the unhoused, the effects of homelessness and related programs, and policies that allow law enforcement agencies to conduct harmful sweeps, destroy personal belongings, and continue the displacement of people experiencing homelessness.
Moral Monday gave the community an opportunity to come together to promote and restore a "moral narrative" in the public sphere and to discuss issues affecting our unhoused neighbors.
The August 24 Moral Monday was dedicated in memory of the late Vanessa Diane Franklin (July 25, 1963-February 15, 2020), who was unhoused and lived on Stockton Blvd with her beautiful red truck. The Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign and the Sacramento Area Black Caucus formed a friendship with Vanessa. She volunteered and attended community events sponsored by both groups and became a reliable volunteer at the Friends of Colonial Heights Library’s Family Game Night.
