Tonight, the Council voted 7-2 to approve a budget that will jeopardize public safety, endanger our most vulnerable communities, and shatter key connections between residents & City government; all while failing to address the root causes of our structural deficit. I voted No - because I know that Sacramento can do better, and that Sacramentans deserve better.

For every one of the four years since you elected me as your Councilmember in 2022, I’ve advocated for Council to adopt a two-year balanced budget cycle. Making countless micro-cuts every year, as we’ve been doing, only to end up with another deficit the next is unacceptable. We owe our Constituents & our City employees more than half-measures and endless cycles of uncertainty.

Sacramentans deserve a budget that will ensure the safety of their families & neighborhoods, address the homelessness crisis with accountability & transparency, and deliver on bringing down the costs of housing for working people in our City.

This budget does not meet those challenges. Therefore, I cannot support this year’s budget.

We can do better.
