Thanks to Mrs. Kim Patterson, Access students got the opportunity to practice real life math skills this past week! They spent two weeks working on their money skills and “earning” money that they then got to use to shop for items in a store she created just for them, based on individual needs, interests, and preferences. They used calculator skills to track their spending and had to make the appropriate change for the cashier. What a wonderful, practical, and fun way to “do math”!!!!

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Hosting
2026 Bartram Living History Festival

Historical interpreters, tours, music, and more return to Alpine Groves Park

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Florida, April 22, 2026 – On May 2, the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department, in coordination with the St. Johns Cultural Council, will host the 2026 Bartram Living History Fest at Alpine Groves Park (2060 SR-13, St. Johns).

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the park will play host to crafts tables, historical interpreters and demonstrations (including William Bartram himself, the Long Warrior, Luisa Fatio, a blacksmith, and more), live music by the Wetland String Band and Skin & Bonz, and tours of the park’s historic farmhouse in celebration of Floridian history from the early 18th century to the 21st. Twisted Okie and the Sour Filly will be at the park providing refreshments.

“This festival is a great opportunity to experience the charm of Alpine Groves Park while connecting with the history that helped shape our community,” said Kelly Ussia, Outdoor Recreation Supervisor. “We’re proud to offer an event that’s both educational and enjoyable for everyone.”

“From meeting historical figures like William Bartram to enjoying live music and exploring the farmhouse, there’s something for everyone to discover,” said Nathan Otter, Natural Resources Superintendent. “Alpine Groves Park is one of my favorite parks in the county, and it’s the perfect setting for an event that brings our history to life.”

Attendees will be able to catch shuttles from Hickory Creek Elementary (235 Hickory Creek Trail, St. Johns). Shuttles will transport attendees to and from Alpine Groves Park starting at 9:30 a.m. and will run until 2:30 p.m. The shuttle and the event itself are both free.

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Hosting 2026 Just Tri It! Kids Triathlon

A new parent/child division will let parents race alongside younger children

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Florida, April 10, 2026 – On April 26, the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the 2026 Just Tri It! Kids Triathlon at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center (1300 Duval St., St. Augustine).

Children from 5 to 14 years old will compete in a real, timed triathlon, divided into three age groups: 5–8, 9–11, and 12–14. Each participant will receive an event T-shirt and a finisher medal. Check-in starts at 7:15 a.m., and the triathlon begins at 8 a.m.

Parks and Recreation is excited to welcome a new race director for 2026, along with a new parent/child division designed to give younger or first-time participants the comfort and confidence of racing with a parent by their side.

Registration is $40 per racer. Starting April 19, the price will increase to $50.

“Parks and Recreation is thrilled to continue growing the Just Tri It! Kids Triathlon and to introduce our new parent/child division this year,” said Tess Simpson, Community Program Manager. “It’s a fun, supportive way for kids to build confidence, stay active, and even share the experience with their parents. Thanks to the generous support of the St. Johns County Parks Foundation and our sponsors, we’re able to make this event accessible and memorable for so many local families.”

On April 9, Tess Simpson and Marithza Ross, Executive Director of the St. Johns County Parks Foundation, were special guests on local Facebook show Sunny TV to promote the triathlon and the partnership between Parks and Recreation and the Foundation. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] for questions regarding the event.

Last week our Best Buddy officers received an award from the Len Mattiace’s Anti-Bullying Campaign for their service projects this year. The officers held a sock drive for the Homeless Coalition at the beginning of the year, collecting over 1,000 pair of socks! They also made large placemats for the residents of The Ponce nursing facility and rehab center to use in their dining room. There is no better way to carry out the mission of Best Buddies than to care for others. Well done, buddies!!! 💜

Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to build your student’s home library with new books they’ll dive into again and again.
The easiest way to let your child shop the Fair independently is by creating an eWallet. It’s easy to set up and easy for others to add funds. Create an eWallet, and you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to Share the Fair - the giving program that supports students at our school who need help buying books. eWallets let students shop the fair directly – no cash or credit card necessary! However, we do still accept cash, check, card, or Apple/Samsung pay.
Here’s everything else you need to know about the Book Fair:

Dates: April 13th – April 20th
Location: Media Center
Accepted Payment methods: eWallet, Cash, check made out to GRMS, card, or Apple/Samsung pay.
For full details, and to create an eWallet, visit our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/gamblerogersmiddleschool
More than ever, we need to get students reading. Studies prove* that children with more books at home have higher-level reading skills and attain more years of education overall.
Please note that the materials available for purchase at the Book Fair were not selected by the St. Johns County School District. We encourage you to review your students’ wish list and have a conversation about what they are allowed to purchase at the book fair before sending money to make any purchases. Purchases can also be made online – all orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school! Please email [email protected] if you have any questions regarding the book fair. To preview the books that will be at our fair please visit https://preview.scholasticbookfairs.com/hub?pkid=J2&flag=n&sdate=20260413.
Happy reading!
