Have you ever changed your spending habits because of changing prices? Economists have a word for that: elasticity.
Some goods, like gasoline, are mostly “inelastic”, meaning that demand is largely steady despite the price—because people rely on them and there are limited alternatives. That’s why high gas prices due to the Iran War are so painful now - drivers need the fuel and have no choice but to suffer at the pump.
Groceries, on the other hand, are more “elastic”; while people need to eat, they have lots of alternatives and can change their buying habits as prices rise due to White House tariffs and foreign bailouts.
A recent AP-NORC shows just how much rising grocery bills have affected American families: 8 out of 10 people have changed where they shop, what they buy — even where and how much they eat — as a result of skyrocketing prices.
Working families shouldn’t have to grit their teeth at the gas station or make tough choices at the grocery store because the White House and its GOP allies in Congress are thinking more about the bottom line for billionaires and big business.
Congress should be focused instead on family budgets — those kitchen table issues that affect day-to-day life and allow working families to thrive and not just survive … and a chance to enjoy, and not just chase, the American Dream.
