Pruning trims the tail off of winter and signals to the grapevine spring is on its way. Prune too soon and risk damage if a hard frost hits, while delaying pruning can protect the vine from waking up too soon. Grapes grow on new wood so cane or spur pruning removes the dead wood from the past year. This gorgeous vineyard off HWY 29 in Calistoga is prime for pruning so keep an eye out. It happens fast.
