That’s a wrap on the 2026 MPFF Convention! Members ended the annual business meeting yesterday evening after hearing speeches from several key figures, including Senator and Minnesota Governor candidate Amy Klobuchar, IAFF 5th District VP Mahlon Mitchell, Winona Mayor Scott Sherman, and Winona Fire Chief Joel Corcoran.
We presented several awards to people who have gone above and beyond in service of Minnesota’s career firefighters. Named in honor of former MPFF President Chris Parsons, who died in the line of duty in 2023, the Chris Parsons Legislative Award recognizes outstanding efforts that have turned into legislative wins for firefighters across Minnesota and the United States. Our first three recipients were State Representative Pete Johnson, Judy Seeberger, and Julie Paidar.
The 89th MPFF Convention also marked the celebration for the retirement of one of our longest-serving board members. Secretary-Treasurer Tom Clark completed his term yesterday, marking the end of a 14-year tenure with the MPFF. Prior to being elected to the board, Tom was an officer of Minneapolis Local 82. Recognizing his contributions to the organization and his vast institutional knowledge, delegates voted to confer the title of Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus to Tom. Congratulations Tom, we will miss you!
Convention is also where new board members are sworn in for their term. Cody Thornberg will serve as the new Secretary-Treasurer. Tom Schulte and Mike Rybarczyk will continue in their roles as Southern District VP and Trustee, respectively. Shane Hallow, president of Hennepin County Association of Paramedics and EMTs IAFF Local 5651, was appointed as the first-ever EMS District VP, a position created by resolution at this Convention.
Thank you to all delegates who attended and participated in building a stronger MPFF. Thank you especially to Local 575 for being great hosts and welcoming us to Winona!
