The Holy Spirit's Nudge: Arise and Shine Devotional

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Genesis 1:2 (NIV)

Arise and shine, dear one! God is with you!

"Mom, watch this!"

My son was filled with wonder at the small stream. He picked up a leaf, tucked it into the water flowing through the pipe, and ran to the other side of the short bridge to watch it emerge, only to get stuck on a rock. Undeterred, he grabbed a stick and nudged the leaf until it was whisked away by the current.

As I watched the ripples cascading over the rocks, with bugs skating across the surface, I thought of the Holy Spirit at creation, hovering over the waters, present from before the beginning of time.

We often think of the Holy Spirit first at Pentecost, when He filled the believers of the early church… forgetting He appears on the very first page of Scripture. He's been there all along: moving upon select individuals throughout the Old Testament, even causing baby John the Baptist to leap in his mother's womb before Jesus was born.

The Holy Spirit is still at work today. He's with you as you open your Bible, revealing the truth of God's Word to your heart. He empowers and equips you for the good work God has for you.

He still speaks… gently prodding us toward obedience. Just as my son nudged the leaf into the current, I imagine the Holy Spirit nudging my heart, guiding my next steps. When I sit silently before Him, seeking His voice, I'll often hear Him bring a Scripture to mind, whisper a Bible story to my heart, or simply remind me of my value as a daughter of the King.

Has the Holy Spirit been nudging your heart recently, dear one? Do you sense His presence hovering over you, guiding you along a certain path? Are you willing to yield to His gentle prodding?

He's been present all along in Scripture, whether we noticed Him or not… and He's present with you now, whether you sense Him or not. Get to know Him today. Listen for His voice; you just might be surprised at how He responds.
