A few weeks back I joined the first ever LIGA Conference, (Latinos in Government Alliance). LIGA has been around for a few years as mostly a support system for Latinos in government who needed a space to be together and to share ideas across cities and counties.

For generations, our families have navigated government with uncertainty, language barriers, and sometimes fear. Today, Latino public servants are helping rewrite that story every day.

We are planners, firefighters, teachers, analysts, public works employees, interpreters, city staff, state employees and so much more. We are the people helping our neighbors understand government, access services, feel seen, and know that they belong.

Representation isn’t just about seeing someone who looks like you. It’s about seeing what’s possible.

To every Latino working in public service: thank you for showing up. Your work matters. Your perspective matters. And the communities we serve are stronger because you’re there.

Oregon needs you. Keep showing up. 🇲🇽🇺🇸🇵🇷🇸🇻🇬🇹🇭🇳🇵🇪🇨🇱🇨🇴

As leadership of the BIPOC Caucus, we vehemently condemn the actions of Commissioners Tom Kress, Chris Boice, and Tim Freeman who declared Douglas County to be against Oregon’s values and laws.

Oregon became the first sanctuary state in the nation in 1987 because that is who we are. Oregonians believe in a state that makes everyone feel welcome regardless of who they are and where they come from. Since then, Oregonians continue to uphold those very laws at the ballot box and in the Legislature.

While the Commissioners claim that they are making communities safer, we are stunned to have to spell out the reality of Oregonians being targeted by ICE based on the color of their skin. In light of people dying at the hands of ICE in this month alone, we find this declaration to not only be depraved to those realities, but also unconscionable.

We are dismayed by the Douglas County Board’s undemocratic push for this resolution’s adoption. When you attempt to sideline public meetings law by not including the resolution on the meeting agenda and decline public comment from community members, it shows that you just care about your little political agenda.

We will not stand for this. We will be following this matter closely and exploring avenues to address this injustice.

An Oregon Department of Justice official said the resolution does not supersede state law and that the agency will monitor the county for compliance.
