Loved getting to celebrate the opening of the Northwest Library in its new home!

This beautiful new space is part of Multnomah County Library continued investment in making our libraries welcoming, modern, and community-centered places for everyone. From lifelong learners to families discovering the joy of reading, this library is built to serve the neighborhood for generations to come.

Grateful to see Senator Lisa Reynolds, county leaders, and so many community members for the ribbon cutting—and excited to see this space filled with books, music, and people. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this project happen!

I was honored to join the community in celebrating my friend Jeff Hairston as he was sworn in as the new Fire Chief of the Gresham Fire Department, a historic moment as he becomes the first Black fire chief in our city’s history.

Chief Hairston’s journey to this role is truly inspiring. From his grandfather Sam Hairston, the first Black player on the Chicago White Sox, and his father John Hairston, the first Black catcher on the Chicago Cubs reminds us all of the powerful legacy of breaking barriers.

Jeff himself played professional baseball in the early 1990s with the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates before he came to Gresham, where he served as a physical education teacher at Gresham High School and later joined the fire department.

Since being hired by the City in 2006, when he also became Gresham’s first Black firefighter, he’s spent nearly 20 years serving our community with dedication, leadership, and courage.

Congratulations, Chief Hairston! I’m proud to stand with you and grateful for your service and I’m excited to see the continued positive impact you’ll have for our city and those you lead.

We stand with our colleagues, Sen. Jama, Rep. Valderrama, and Rep. Wise, as our state reckons with the reality of two Oregonians shot violently by federal agents. We are heartbroken by this act of brutality, and our thoughts are with loved ones as the victims are hospitalized.

By no means do federal immigration enforcement keep our communities safe. They often accomplish the complete opposite, using racial profiling as a means to detain Oregonians – regardless of citizenship status – and target our most vulnerable communities. We demand that federal agents get out of our state.

In a time when Oregon is being attacked by a hostile federal administration, we stand together in condemning the violence. At a critical crossroads, we are ready to meet the moment and show up for Oregonians. That is why for the short session we are committed to bringing forward legislation to protect all of our communities.

On the front page of the Oregonian, Reps. Lesly Muñoz and Ricki Ruiz announced the Protect Your Door Act, creating accountability for when federal agents violate the Fourth Amendment rights of Oregonians.

En la página delantera de The Oregonian, Repres. Lesly Muñoz y Ricki Ruiz anunciaron la ley Protect Your Door Act, creando responsabilidad para cuando agentes federales violan los derechos de la Cuarta Enmienda de Oregonianos.

The Illinois governor signed a similar law – then was quickly sued by the Trump administration.

After talking to NW Natural, they have released a multi language notice that will also go to every customer regarding how to best identify a NW Natural Utility Worker when they come to your home or are nearby.

There has been reports of ICE agents disguising as utility workers to lure people out of their homes. Please stay aware

“We are aware of reports of individuals impersonating utility workers in order to gain access to residents. Please note:

Our workers who show up at your home should either be wearing a uniform and a utility badge or wearing a badge that says “CONTRACTOR.” Their vehicles should be similarly marked with a NW Natural company logo and/or “CONTRACTOR.”

If someone comes to your house and asks for access to your home or for you to come outside:

Our employees will never ask for immediate access to customers' homes. They often will go to a back or side yard to access a meter.
In most situations, if there is a reason a NW Natural employee would need to go inside a customer's home (such as a safety check or inspection), they would have set this up with the customer in advance.
If you want to verify if someone at your home is a NW Natural employee or contractor, you can call our customer service line at 503-226-4211 or 800-422-4012. If you suspect an imposter, call 9-1-1 immediately.”
