State Representative Susan McLain

State Representative Susan McLain Mother, Grandmother, Former Teacher, and 5th-generation Oregonian. Rep. McLain is a 5th-generation Oregonian, raised on farms in the Willamette Valley.

I am honored to serve as State Representative for House District 29, Hillsboro - Cornelius - Forest Grove. *Not an official government account.* When she was young, Susan got involved in 4-H and raised sheep, swine, and beef cattle with her brothers and sisters. A graduate of Western Oregon University (formerly O.C.E), Susan spent over 40 years teaching and coaching speech and debate in Hillsboro.

In 2011, she was honored to receive a Crystal Apple award for outstanding local teachers from the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce. Susan recently received a national award for longevity and excellence as Glencoe High School’s Speech and Debate coach and was also inducted as a Performing Arts nominee into the National High School Hall of Fame. Susan raised her family in Forest Grove, where she still lives today. The unique balance between her rural upbringing and her family’s proximity to a metropolitan area was the reason she decided to run for a position as Metro Regional Government Councilor in 1990. Susan was elected to serve on the Metro Council four terms in a row. Susan has always worked to be a good listener and make sure the public has input on issues of land use and planning, transportation, and solid waste. It was – and always will be – important to her to make sure that she is helping facilitate a government that is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of Oregon voters.

Many of you know that coaching and competing in speech and debate has been a lifelong joy of mine. I began debating at 14 and have spent more than four decades as a teacher, coach, tournament director, and member of Oregon’s speech and debate community.

I’m honored to announce the inaugural Rep. Susan McLain Capitol Classic, a one-day Student Congress tournament at the Oregon State Capitol on Friday, October 9, 2026! Thank you to Mack Smith and the members of the speech and debate community who organized this meaningful surprise.

Applications are open through 4 p.m. September 13. Students will be notified by September 18.

Good news for Oregonians! The Oregon Public Utility Commission approved PGE’s proposed rate changes, effective today, July 8th.

Residents and businesses across Oregon should not have to foot the bill for big tech and data centers. I was proud to support and co-sponsor the POWER Act, which made this victory possible. I’m glad to see the Oregon Public Utility Commission hold data centers accountable as a result of this new law.

I am proud to stand with LGBTQ+ Oregonians and celebrate the diversity, authenticity, and resilience within our communities.

While yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling was a step backward on inclusivity, we'll keep fighting for the rights and freedoms of all. Our trans families, friends, and neighbors belong here.

If you missed a local Pride event this June, save the date for Portland Pride - July 18th and 19th.

June is recognized as Gun Violence Awareness Month, though I believe every month should be. Gun violence remains a public health crisis and is the leading cause of death for American children and teens. Tragically, one in ten gun deaths in the United States involves a young person age 19 or younger. These statistics are a reminder of the work that remains to keep our communities safe and protect the next generation.

To the residents of Forest Grove, Cornelius, and Hillsboro, thank you.

It is an honor to serve House District 29 & to keep fighting for our community’s future as the Democratic nominee.

Now we head into the general election with a clear mission: protecting Oregonians from federal overreach, lowering costs for working families, strengthening our schools, defending our environment, and building a safer, smarter transportation system for us all.

I appreciate all those who took time to engage in the democratic process, run for office, and vote.

Onward to November! 💙

I had the honor of joining Governor Kotek, health care advocates, physicians, and community leaders to celebrate the signing of three bills that protect Oregonians' access to the care they need and deserve.

HB 4088, HB 4127, and SB 1598 are part of Oregon's defense against federal attacks on essential health services. We're strengthening protections for providers and patients, ensuring Planned Parenthood can continue providing critical care, and making sure vaccines remain accessible and covered.

I'm proud to have co-sponsored and voted YES on these bills. Oregon will not let the federal government strip away access to reproductive care, gender-affirming care, and preventive services.
