🇺🇸 What does the 4th of July mean to Uproar Utah?

Today, we aren’t just celebrating a date on a calendar—we are celebrating a promise. Our nation was founded on the sacred right to due process and the rule of law. True patriotism means holding our country to those high ideals and ensuring they apply to EVERYONE.

We love this community, and that’s why we refuse to let human beings be locked in warehouse cages. While we wait for official, written confirmation from DHS that the SLC project is dead, we remain united in our vision: No cages here. No cages anywhere.

The Supreme Court just greenlit the administration's cruel plan to strip Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from 330,000+ Haitians—forcing them back to a severe humanitarian crisis.

The House already voted to protect our Haitian neighbors until 2029. Now, the Senate is stalling on the identical bill (S. 4814). We need to flood their offices TODAY.

Reports state that DHS is dropping its plan to retrofit the Salt Lake City warehouse into an ICE detention facility. This major win proves that when a community stands up, the federal government is forced to listen.

While we are celebrating, our cause was never just about a facility in our own backyard. We cannot be satisfied while our neighbors are whisked away without constitutional due process, or while traumatized children struggle in our schools because of local ICE presence.

We will keep fighting until our country prioritizes human dignity. This warehouse may be stopped—but we'll keep working to change the system.

During the Great Depression, the U.S. government launched "Mexican Repatriation"—a campaign of mass roundups that forced hundreds of thousands of people across the border.

The tragedy? Up to 60% of them were actually U.S. citizens and legal residents. Bypassing constitutional due process, federal agents raided neighborhoods, workplaces, and public parks, tearing families apart simply because of their heritage.

This isn't just a footnote in history books; it is a stark warning. When economic anxiety and fear are weaponized, it paves the way for the state-sanctioned removal of entire communities. We must remember our past if we want to protect our neighbors today.

At our press conference, our legal team exposed the terrifying environmental reality of the proposed SLC mega-detention center.

The cost to Utahns? A shrinking lakebed means a massive expansion of toxic dust. Over 2.66 million downwind residents could be forced to inhale up to 1,500 tons of additional arsenic-laced dust every single year. Uproar Utah and the Utah Refugee Justice League have served the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE a formal notice of intent to sue in U.S. District Court.

The federal government quietly spent $145 million of taxpayer money to purchase a massive commercial warehouse at the Utah Inland Port, planning to convert it into a 10,000-capacity immigrant jail. They did this while completely bypassing mandatory public accountability, administrative reviews, and environmental laws.

An 833,000-square-foot warehouse by the Great Salt Lake sat vacant for years. On March 11, DHS quietly bought this "Utah Inland Port" property for a staggering $145.4 million—paying nearly 50% over its assessed value to a private fund tied to Deutsche Bank.

Our tax dollars just handed a massive payout to international financiers to build a mega-detention facility in our backyard. A space the size of 14 football fields built for industrial cargo is no place for thousands of people.
