“Therefore, renounce war and proclaim peace.”

This commandment, given in Doctrine and Covenants 98:16, was given in the context of violence directed to Mormons internally within the United States. War, then, can be applied internally to its own citizens just as it can be waged abroad.

Today, war is still turned inward towards those oppressed in our country. From police acting as occupying armies in minoritized communities, to ICE occupying our cities, kidnapping our community members, and killing our friends and family.

If we renounce war, we must renounce ICE, our militarized police, and war abroad, whether that be war on Palestine, Cuba, Venezuela, or Iran—whether that war is starvation through retaliatory sanctions, “specialized” military operations, funding a proxy war, or boots on the ground.

Fascism is imperialism and colonialism turned inward. In the words of Aimé Césaire: “It is [imperialism], yes, but before they were its victims, they were its accomplices; they tolerated [imperialism] before it was inflicted on them, they absolved it, shut their eyes to it, legitimized it, because, until then, it had been applied only to non-[Americans].”

Despite the LDS Church supporting “an approach where undocumented immigrants are allowed to square themselves with the law and continue to work” “provide for their families and become better contributing members of our community,” is hosting Customs and Border Patrol at their career fair as CBP actively opposes any policy even directionally aligned with this.

Students at BYU are rising up and loudly opposing this!

TOMORROW, Friday, Jan. 30, will be a nationwide strike to protest the ex*****on and murder of Alex Pretti. Join us Friday at 2pm at Washington Square Park!

Tomorrow we disrupt business as usual and shut down the country in solidarity with working people across the country as we demand the end of ICE, and oppressive immigration polices!
