Think About It Thursday: Wasted Food = Wasted Opportunity 💭🍽️

In 2019, the U.S. generated a staggering 66 million tons of food waste. Yet, only 5% was composted. The rest? It made up 24% of municipal solid waste, making food the #1 material in landfills.

🚨 That’s a lot of wasted resources. But it doesn’t have to be.

Are there ways your business can cut down on food waste? From better inventory management to composting programs and donation partnerships, small changes can have a big impact.

Let’s dig in and find solutions—together. ♻️ Food for thought from ReWorksSA.

Can beauty sustainability exist in the same space? We think so.

One of the easiest ways top create a more sustainable landscape is by choosing native plants.
Hers's why they're a great choice:
They need less water and maintenance, helping save both resources and time.

They attract pollinators and local wildlife, supporting a healthier ecosystem.

Do you get confused on what is actually recyclable? Here’s a tip.

Regardless of who collects or where you take your recycling, there are some universally accepted materials.

Clean paper
Flattened cardboard
Empty metal cans
Empty plastic bottles and jugs

Stick to these Core 4 to keep recycling simple for all employees.

Some private haulers don’t accept glass and some manufacturer packaging has recycling symbols on material that isn’t universally accepted. So, avoid any confusion and think Core 4. You’ll never go wrong.

💡Need more information on what you can recycle at your office. Check with your waste and recycling hauler for a list of acceptable materials!

Tip Tuesday

Attention Tea Drinkers.
Whether tea is your morning caffeine to gear up for work or your afternoon relaxation on your break, consider steeping without the bag. Switch to loose tea leaves and use a tea infuser and there will be nothing left to dispose of – except the leaves which are compostable.

Today is International Plastic Bag Free Day!
Why stop using disposable bags? A single plastic bag takes years to decompose and can become tangled in recycling machinery. It’s time to swap the ‘single use’ mindset for something more sustainable. Before you head to work, try a few of these tips:
Bring your own tote: Use a reusable bag to pack your work items.
Eating out for lunch? Refuse the plastic bag to put the takeout container. If you’re only buying one or two prepackaged items, skip the bag entirely!
Return disposables: Have plastic bags lying around the workplace? Collect them in a single bag and take it to a store-drop-off bin at your local grocery or retailer.
Small changes can lead to fewer plastic bags wasted over time.

Here’s a tip. ☀️

If you’re using disposable utensils at work, remember that even though they’re plastic, they are not recyclable. Plus, they’re flimsy, hard to use, and worst of all, end up in the landfill.
Get a reusable utensil set for work as a sturdy sustainable solution. A small purchase can make a big difference.

What is commingled recycling (or single-stream recycling)?
It's a recycling system that allows approved recyclable materials to be placed together in a single recycling container, making recycling more convenient for everyone.
Before tossing items in the bin, remember three recycling rules:
✅Clean
✅Loose
✅Dry
Keeping recyclables free of food, liquids, and plastic bags helps ensure they can be properly recycled.
