Gonzales: New law assures all evidence released

Today, a new law went into effect that requires law enforcement to certify that they have disclosed all evidence that they are aware of when filing a case with the District Attorney's Office. This is a promising step toward greater transparency and accountability for all involved in the criminal justice system. This new law will allow our community to know the justice my office is seeking is rooted in fact and evidence.

The COVID-19 Briefing: August 26, 2021 will begin at 6:13 p.m.

On August 19, 2021, the Texas Education Agency issued guidance which stated in part that “mask provisions of GA-38 are not being enforced as the result of ongoing litigation.” At this time, my office will defer to this guidance issued by TEA, and no prosecutions of school district officials within my jurisdiction as Bexar County District Attorney will occur as a result of those issuing mask mandates.

I understand that this litigation has been confusing for public officials, administrators and, most importantly, the public. Rest assured that we are working tirelessly to protect those who cannot protect themselves. I continue to urge those who are eligible for a COVID vaccine and/or a booster to get vaccinated and to continue to wear a mask to prevent the spread of this virus. For more information, please watch today's COVID-19 Briefing.

The Bexar County DA’s Conviction Integrity Unit has assisted two San Antonio men to receive exonerations from a 2017 drug sting. John Gabriel Cape and Louie Garcia were arrested in Aug. 2017 after a confidential informant told investigators that they would find methamphetamine at a San Antonio home. The men were charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. It wasn’t until early 2020 that the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office learned there was strong evidence the informant planted the drugs.
