Alameda County Center for Healthy Schools and Communities

Alameda County Center for Healthy Schools and Communities Equitable conditions for health and learning are essential for ensuring that every child in Alameda County is healthy, ready for school, and able to learn.

Since 1996, the Center for Healthy Schools and Communities has worked to improve the health and education outcomes of Alameda County youth by building school-based and school-linked health and wellness programs. Our work extends beyond simply placing health services on school sites; it is rooted in purposeful, responsive collaborations with youth, families, schools, and surrounding institutions. We are staffed through Alameda County Health Care Services Agency. We are a multidisciplinary team of professionals with expertise in education, behavioral health, public health, and youth development.

Yesterday, the County Board of Supervisors approved $750,000 for the defense and protection of Alameda County's immigrant and refugee communities. This leverages an additional $750,000 from an anonymous foundation that will support outreach, legal aid, community education, and more. We’re so proud to be a part of this County!

The Oakland Unified students pictured below were just some of the many community members and organizations that shared their stories in support of the initiative. Thank you to our Unaccompanied Immigrant Youth Initiative Coordinator Jasmine Gonzalez for the update and photos!

Children living in poverty often are exposed to high levels of constant stress that can be debilitating, not only in terms of their physical health but also their ability to learn. So what are schools to do?

Two writers argue — in their own voices, first, and then together with one voice — that schools and health providers must join forces to make sure children are getting the help they need.

Supreme Court decision deals blow to health coverage efforts in California

This week's Supreme Court decision stalls California's efforts to provide medical care to the children of illegal immigrants.

"Without these programs, researchers estimate that as many as 1.5 million of the 2.67 million immigrants in the state illegally could remain uninsured by 2019 – roughly half of California's total uninsured population."

The Supreme Court decision Thursday effectively blocking President Obama’s immigration programs also comes as a blow to California legislators who have been fighting to offer health insurance to people living in the country illegally.
