Happy Friday!! Taking a moment to shout out one of our own, Tisha Hernandez

Tisha was able to go above and beyond this week in assisting an older adult client. The client wanted to attend our 4-week Pre-Purchase Workshop.

Tisha was able to register her into November course, while setting up a time on Zoom for a “test run” to ensure that the client was able to seamlessly access the course and have the best experience possible.

“The highlight for me was being able to work with her, and make her feel comfortable instead of allowing her to be irritated with herself since she was an adult client and was not aware of how to use the platform," said Tisha.

This is just a quick example of how the RNHS team takes ownership of problems to get the job done!

If you or someone that you know is in need of housing assistance, reach out to Tisha Hernandez at [email protected]

This month RNHS had the pleasure of speaking with Marisa Schwarz from the UC Berkeley School of journalism about a story she is covering; the topic, homeownership in San Pablo CA.
Marisa wanted to know exactly how RNHS impacts the community in terms of creating homeownership opportunities. During this interview we learned about a program (SPLASH) that we would like to give a shout out to for all the impactful work they do.

SPLASH is a first-time homebuyer program offered by the San Pablo Housing Successor Agency (HSA) of the City of San Pablo and the San Pablo EDC for qualified low-income aspiring homeowners. https://www.sanpabloedc.org/SPLASH

So, if your dream is to be a homeowner, reach out to our Administrative Assistant Tisha Hernandez at [email protected]
Tisha can guide you through the process and introduce you to the many resources RNHS has to you!

RNHS is happy to welcome Joshua Mora to The team has our Community Development Intern development he’s done an incredible amount of work since joining us in September and excited for his future within the organization!…

Joshua recently graduated with a bachelor’s in Environmental Policy and Planning, Joshua was always interested in ways in which he could make change in his community. Initially invested in public transportation and the ways that could bridge gaps in inequity, he soon realized that those gaps stemmed from issues of prolonged generational wealth gaps.

Further inspired by a housing policy class, Joshua wanted to get his foot in the door to create change and after miraculously connecting with Nikki A. Beasley was given the opportunity to do just that at Richmond Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc.

Joshua is currently a Community Development Intern, working on assessing properties and projects to help emerging BIPOC developers get their foot in the door, the same way he could.

He also works on community outreach and making sure that marginalized groups have a seat at the table and are being heard, which is what RNHS is all about.

Joshua feels invested in his position at RNHS and believes that he can given a unique chance to help others grow, while experiencing his own growth at the same time.

In his free time Joshua loves exploring the Bay Area music scene, watching anime, playing FPS games, and exploring fashion to build his personal style.

Meet Charles Ampate, a Housing Counselor for the Keys to Equity Program at RNHS!
Charles first learned about RNHS and our Keys to Equity Program from a recruiter. Having worked in the financial industry before, he knew this was a good opportunity to utilize his skills while helping the community, and decided to come on board. Charles has been working with RNHS for about a month, and so far, has had a great experience. His favorite part is contacting clients to let them know about the opportunities within the ADU program, helping them get started on their journey and providing them with support every step of the way. By identifying his clients’ needs and showing them the different options they have to participate in the program, Charles has found fulfillment in being able to help clients achieve their dream of owning an ADU. In his free time, you can find Charles jogging around his neighborhood, spending time chatting with his friends, and cooking up meals to share with his family.

Meet Cymone Goree, a Property and Finance Manager at RNHS!

Cymone and her family have a long history with RNHS. Her mom was on the board of directors and her dad is the handyman in charge of minor repairs for our Richmond rental properties. Having had many connections to the organization, Cymone knew she wanted to be a part of the team and started off as the Administrative Assistant in 2011. In 2018, she decided to take on the homeownership journey herself and went through many of RNHS’s programs and workshops. Cymone often uses this experience to help aspiring homeowners through their journey, frequently offering them advice, and sharing her story. Helping her community thrive through these conversations and other forms of assistance is her favorite part of the job. In her 10 years with the organization, Cymone has grown a lot, both within RNHS and herself. She is currently the Property and Finance Manager and is in charge of managing our rental portfolio and financials. In her free time, you can find Cymone being a “plant mom,” collecting and caring for houseplants in her condo. She credits her parents for teaching her the importance of having live plants in your home. Before moving in she had one plant, and now she has 22!

Our Story

Richmond Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. (RNHS) has a long rich history in the City of Richmond. It has provided housing services to Richmond residents since 1981. RNHS was founded by dedicated low- income Richmond residents to address the housing needs within the community and was created to strengthen low income families and neighborhoods through the development and management of housing projects. RNHS has served hundreds of families and individuals in jeopardy of losing their homes. RNHS has developed, acquired and/or rehabilitated over 400 single family homes including housing developments in blighted and vacant lots to sell or manage as affordable homes to purchase, or rent for low- income families. RNHS has also served residents through our education programs that include financial literacy programs, home loan programs, foreclosure prevention, and affordable rental counseling. The cornerstone of the organization’s mission is to ensure that East Bay (specific areas include Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo and Pinole) and County residents have access to affordable housing (by definition of those incomes below median levels) and rents; while staying relevant to the current housing crisis conversation taking place in the Bay Area. Currently RNHS is looking to add additional services to its platform to ensure the organizational relevancy. The landscape of housing services has changed in the City of Richmond; currently RNHS is the only organization with an active concentration in the development and acquisition efforts to secure properties for low income families. The AHEAD grant will be instrumental in our efforts in developing the next stage of our work; this work includes the promotion of homeownership and affordable rents, and launching an advocacy component to ensure that under represented and underserved communities within the area RNHS ( Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, and Pinole) serves are not ignored as significant dollars (NHTF- National Housing Trust Fund) are distributed through communities to address the rental housing benefiting extremely low income (ELI) households (75%) and the needs of very low income (VLI) households(25%) serving communities that have been labeled to have the greatest disparity related to income and housing.

Richmond NHS continues to work for a more just and equitable society. Richmond NHS is a HUD-approved Housing Counseling agency.
