Marin Community Alliance (MCA) is a grassroots local community group formed to protect and preserve the character of Marin County’s communities and surrounding natural environment. MCA is focused on ensuring that local government planning policies respect and represent the interests, needs and desires of its constituents and their neighborhoods. Recently, the Marin County Board of Supervisors appr
oved a controversial amendment to the countywide general land use plan despite overwhelmingly strong public objections. The Board’s decision promotes future high-density residential development (such as what we are now seeing in Corte Madera), as well as streamlined application procedures and exemptions from previous requirements for 32 land sites covering a total of 1,572 acres. This streamlined process may significantly limit public input on any future development of these sites throughout unincorporated areas of Marin County. MCA believes that all new housing development in Marin must be compatible with and appropriate for

the size and character of the local community. Marin County deserves a housing plan that does not circumvent existing policies and procedures; that uses accurate data as a foundation for making informed decisions; and that ensures the financial and environmental impacts of any site selection process will be distributed in a fair and balanced way throughout the county. In an effort to accomplish this goal, MCA filed a legal action in Marin County Superior Court on October 24, 2013, to challenge the environmental review process conducted by county officials to support their flawed amendments to the countywide general plan. In the absence of this court challenge, all 32 land sites will become the final approved inventory for high density development, subject to current and in- progress county and state law exemptions from environmental review requirements and full public consideration for years to come.
