Standing in Our Power

Standing in Our Power Standing in Our Power SiOP amplifies the voices and visions of women of color social justice leaders and social entrepreneurs.

Collectively, we are co-creating new leadership paradigms and practices. Standing in Our Power (SiOP) is an intergenerational network of women of color leaders who are committed to a just, equitable and sustainable world, and seeking to transform our leadership by building new leadership paradigms. SiOP members are working towards racial, gender, economic, reproductive and environmental justice. W

e seek to ignite a cultural shift within our organizations and communities that allows for radical inclusion of the vision and voices of women of color. Launched in 2011, SiOP emerged directly from the need for visionary women of color spaces where we can work collectively to practice and implement transformative change personally and within society. By fostering strong communities of practice, we seek to redefine the ‘norm’ (often a white male leadership paradigm) and intentionally forge new paths. SiOP has a core team comprised of an inter-generational, cross-race and cross-class group of women. After several months of research and development, followed by a deep listening phase we held our inaugural gathering in October 2012, and have since organized local gatherings and programming as we continue building a national network with local and regional nodes. We recently launched a 10 month Transformative Leadership Institute and held a kick-off national gathering in October 2013. The institute includes local and national gatherings, coaching, training, mentoring, and more. At a time when our nation’s demographics are shifting, SiOP is building the leadership and capacity of women of color, who will be a critical majority, to be at the helm of social movements. Our members are organizing, shaping policies, shifting culture and building new institutions that impact our lives and our world. Ultimately, SiOP aims to create a vibrant, powerful network of women of color leaders who will collectively redefine America’s work environment and leadership structure so that it is more reflective and inclusive of the multi-racial and women-centered society taking shape. Our specific outcomes include:

**Developing, testing and implementing new leadership practices and models, built on equality and justice, which can be shared and utilized in nonprofit work, businesses and government.

**Creating support systems for women of color to better respond to and affect policy changes, as well as more effectively lead grassroots organizing campaigns.

**Developing a strong mentorship model to help guide and encourage the next generation of leadership in the U.S.

**Becoming a resource of tools and practices that inspires new ways of collaborating and leading.

**Shifting the paradigm of leadership in social justice movements and beyond.

💜 Loving yourself is the medicine 💗 This is the truth that has anchored Standing in Our Power from the very beginning. We sought to remember what leadership truly means when it’s rooted in culture, in spirit, in right relationship, in community, and in our whole selves.

Our thriving is more than a job title.
Beyond productivity.
And definitely not about the polished performance we’ve been trained to perfect.

SiOP was born from deep listening among Women of Color leaders, which revealed that the systems we were navigating—nonprofits, philanthropy, movement spaces—were draining us. That we were losing too many brilliant leaders, especially Black women and Women of Color, to burnout, illness, and grief that never got named. And we said: no more.

So we came to the mountain.
Nestled ourselves in nature.
Communed in circles.
Lit sage, candles and incense upon altars.

We slowed down, surrendered.
We told the truth.
And challenged ourselves to live and lead like the future we imagined is possible today through embodiment.

We practiced leadership that doesn’t separate our politics from our prayers. We allowed our bodies to speak, our spirits to lead, and our relationships to be the infrastructure. We remembered that we are not broken and in need of fixing.

We welcomed being witnessed. Held. Honored. Restored.

And now, as we ruminate on this journey—on all that we built, broke open, and became—we want you to know that a deeper reflection is coming. We’re taking time to name the impact, the lessons, and the lineage. What we are creating is a love letter. A testimony. A living archive.

But before all of that, we just want to remind you:

Loving yourself is the medicine.
It always has been.
You don’t need to earn rest.
You don’t need to prove your worth.
You are already whole.

We love you. Stay tuned.

Standing in Our Power is about being rooted—firm in who we are, clear in our purpose, and connected to something greater.

It’s about alignment. When we stand in our power, we rise together.

We were wounded in relationship, so too must we heal in relationship 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾

Standing in Our Power (SiOP) was born from this truth—a space where Women of Color could reclaim our leadership, our healing, and our wholeness together. We recognized that the wounds we carried—of isolation, scarcity, burnout, and betrayal—extends beyond the personal. They are systemic, historical, and designed to keep us disconnected.

So, we circled up to heal in relationship. To practice being in solidarity. To remember that collective care is not a luxury. It is the path to liberation.

Over the years, SiOP evolved into an interdependent ecosystem– a practice ground for radical trust, deep witnessing, and holding each other through transformation. It reminded us of our collective responsibility. We tapped into and practiced our ancestral way, centered spiritual wisdom.

We understood that healing is a path we walk together. So we walked. Towards our north star– a collective vision where joy and abundance filled our bellies because everyone had enough.

bell hooks taught us that love is an act of will—both an intention and an action. She emphasized that healing transcends self-care; it encompasses how we care for one another. Indigenous wisdom reminds us of our interconnectedness, bound in sacred relationships—to each other, to the land, with our ancestors, and with all beings across time.

In a world that has fragmented us, true solidarity must be transformative, not merely performative.

Belonging is a soft, inner revolution,
found in the sanctuary of our own breath.
A place the world cannot touch,
no matter how it claws at our peace.

This world has tried to unname us,
to unroot us,
to scatter us like dust in the wind.
We are still here,
planting ourselves
in the soil of all that is sacred.

From this grounding, we rise and flow—
a wave swelling with the voices of the unheard,
hands pressed to each other,
crafting possibility out of the impossible.

Belonging hums in the marrow of us,
safety blooms in the warmth we conjure.
Together, we are a fire unquenchable,
a vision that’s irresistible and unstoppable.
