This is the calm before the historic storm… The reports are all over the place. We can’t figure out if it’s overreacting or the worst we’ve ever experienced. We’re as prepared as possible, looking forward to a family snuggle/game/movie day.

Sending good vibes to all those in the hurricane’s path… stay safe friends!

🏔️As our city kids pack their bags and snag one last walk around the park - I’m grateful to have been a part of planting a seed of love for nature and our parks. I hope they continue to explore new parks, get their shoes dirty and get outside!

Thank you Yosemite - it’s been an epic week!

Half Dome standing watch over the valley…

After 3 days of rain, sleet and snow, our school group woke up to blue skies and nearly 50°!! Our students were gifted with hikes to El Capitan, Upper Yosemite Falls and all over the valley floor… we’re so grateful to for a fun and educational week that included nearly ALL the elements 😂

🏔️Chaperoning our son’s school trip to Yosemite this week. It began with a deluge of pouring rain and sleet, and by day 2 finally broke into the most spectacular blanket of snow… and with all the rain, I’ve never seen Yosemite Falls SO full! 🌊

❄️ For many, this is their first trip to a National Park and seeing snow! I’m grateful to share this experience with them!

Hiking the Grand Wash is one of our favorite things to do at the park. The scale is just so fascinating and typically you don’t encounter many people along the trail! The tall stone walls and the narrow passage through the wash make it so awe inspiring. Plus there are so many places for the kids to scramble and explore.

Have you hiked the Grand Wash?

Although we haven’t posted much lately, we have managed to get out on the road. We got back to one of our favorite National Parks, and drove the road to Cathedral Valley. What an amazing drive! It’s all dirt roads that were in fairly good shape when we made the journey. We parked and had a nice lunch at the Temple of the Moon.

Worth noting that there is a water crossing at one end of the loop, check with the Park’s visitor center for more information on that as it likely changes seasonally.

It was so amazing to get the wheels dirty on Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain NP ! The road, which opened in 1920 and was the first auto route through the high country, is an 11-mile, one-way, uphill, gravel trail with some dramatic switchbacks. When you get to the top, you’re at 11,796 feet of elevation and on the Tundra which is such an amazing landscape!

We saw some large, mature elk along the Road and stopped to snap some pics which we’ll post soon.

If you’re curious about difficulty of the road, we had no problem with our Subaru Ascent in terms of ground clearance, etc. and we saw some sedans doing it. It was rutted out in the switchbacks and that’s probably where it’s the most sketchy.

We just returned from Rocky Mountain NP… “WOW” doesn’t begin to describe it’s beauty. We stayed on the west side of the park which was heavily burned in last year’s historic fire, but to see a herd of elk grazing in the lush grass reminds you of how incredible our parks are…

More photos to come!

Have you ever been surprised by a new park that presented you with an amazing and unexpected hiking experience? Whitewater Preserve did that for us. We weren’t expecting much and didn’t know much about the park. Once our hike was underway we quickly found ourselves in a beautiful and well-managed landscape that was surprising in how diverse it was. Such an inspiring park!

We’d love to hear about places/parks that surprised you!

We made it back to Yosemite in late March and it was amazing as usual! We initially feared it would be back to normal crowds but surprisingly it was not. We had more space to slowly explore and hang out than we’ve ever experienced. The weather was perfect, hovering around 70 degrees, not a cloud in the sky which while not great for our photos, made for a great trip. We’ve typically visited in the summer when it can get quite hot in Yosemite Valley so this was so nice!

We snapped this pic on the way up to Inspiration Point. The trail was pretty empty with snow and mud along the way, nothing too difficult and just right for a couple of impromptu snowball fights!

We’ve heard they’re going back to the reservation system for the summer to manage the crowds but when we arrived it was open admission.

Where have you been exploring lately?
