Beckham County Sheriff's Office school resource officers Wendi Holland and Richard Jones taught Merritt Kindergarten through second-grade students about tornado safety. Students learned what precautions to take before a storm, what to do if they are in a vehicle during a tornado, and where the safest place to go even if they have no storm shelter. After completing a video and passing a verbal quiz, students received a Rocket's Tornado Safety Activity Book and coloring sheets.

As Prom season arrived again this year, Beckham County SRO's, Wendi Holland and Richard Jones, invited the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office to Merritt High School to stress the importance of not driving under the influence, whether it be alcohol or some other substance. Master Sgt. Christy Yokly works for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office along with the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office to travel Oklahoma and share safety tips with teenagers. She, with the help of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, engages in hands on driving that is done with goggles that simulate being under the influence. They take part in several activities and explain the importance of planning ahead and making good decisions that will keep everyone safe.

Beckham County Sheriff's Office SRO's, Wendi Holland and Richard Jones, presented The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® program to PK through 4th grade Merritt elementary students. The program is a gun accident prevention program that has helped keep kids safe for over 30 years. The program has one mission: teach children four simple, easy to remember steps so they know what to do if they ever come across a gun. The animated video put the message into a song that the students are still singing!
“STOP! Don’t Touch. Run Away. Tell a Grown-up.”

On February 26, 2026, Deputy Wendi Holland, SRO for the Merritt School District, invited the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office to bring a Bicycle Safety Program through Merritt Elementary classes. Master Sgt, Christy Yokly, who works in conjunction with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and the Highway Safety Office, presented safety tips to approximately 200 students between Kindergarten and 2nd grade.

The students were given information on such things as helmet safety and how to know if your helmet is properly sized. It was demonstrated for them on other students so they would be able to use that information for themselves. They were also shown the importance of having the correct bicycle for their size and how to safely signal to others if they were going to make a turn or a stop.

SRO Holland created a poster contest for the students where they could envision and create a helmet that they would like to wear. 1st , 2nd and 3rd place ribbons and prizes were given to each grade. Numerous students also received a prize for Honorable Mention due to having so many participants and such outstanding artwork!

A big shout out to the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and Master Sgt. Yokly for coming out and letting our students participate and take part in this safety awareness program!
