As many of you know, Monday is the deadline to submit paperwork to run as a candidate for the Sayville Board of Education. I learned an incredible amount during my run last year and am proud to have remained actively involved in advocating for meaningful change.
As a longtime advocate for survivors of intimate partner violence and for mental health, I was deeply impacted by the murder of Emily Finn. I am both humbled and honored to support and work along side the Emily Finn Foundation. We all deserve to feel safe—in our homes, schools, communities, and relationships.
Like many in our community, I have at times felt that district leadership can be more focused on defending itself than on listening openly to feedback and continuously striving to improve. That dynamic is frustrating and, in my view, keeps us stuck in the status quo rather than pushing us to lead and evolve.
Over the past year, I’ve also had the opportunity to continue growing Suffolk Counseling Services. We now have four locations, more than 40 providers, and will be launching an OCD-specific treatment program this fall.
Given the demands of my work, the opportunity to attend the Goldman Sachs Small Business Leadership Program this fall, my daughter’s graduation and move to England for university, and the time I want to dedicate to advocacy efforts, I have decided not to run for the Board of Education this year.
I will be watching closely as candidates emerge and hope our community remains open to expanding the depth and diversity of knowledge and expertise represented in its leadership.
Best of luck to those willing to take on the mostly thankless role! I'll be rooting for you all.
