The Biggest Week In American Birding is a special highlight of the year for so many birders from near and far, thanks to the amazing passion and work of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory. Naturally Avian is proud to be a continued partner of this exciting event! It's been a busy week at the booth so far, showing an array of new, fresh-off-the-press prints and cards! There are two more days of the festival, and every hug, field trip, and moment of birding is being savored. Thanks to the many folks who have stopped by the Naturally Avian booth!

Thank you, friends, for being part of this winter’s Naturally Avian birding tours through northern Minnesota. It was an exciting winter of being immersed among the sights and sounds of this unique part of the Upper Midwest. The many specialty bird species made our hearts race with joy. The winter chill was no match for the gorgeous scenery we came across on every trip. The birding treasure hunts through forests and along the icy shore of Gitche Gumee left us with amazing memories. There was northwoods birding zen and so much more! Here are some photos from some of the birding trips that took place throughout February and March.

These photos are available as matted prints.

This winters’ socially-distanced birding tours throughout Sax-Zim Bog and Minnesota’s Northwoods have been providing memorable experiences for many people. Every day is a different adventure while savoring this winter wonderland, home to so many unique birds and mammals, in addition to the beautiful habitat. Every moment in Sax-Zim Bog is a teaching opportunity of what makes this place so special. The relationship between the birds and the boreal ecology is incredible. Here are some photos from just a few of the trips that took place throughout January. Stay tuned for photos and updates from the ongoing February birding trips.

It’s a very challenging time, in so many ways. This winter Naturally Avian will be donating 10% net to the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog non-profit. From significant land conservations efforts, to constructing wilderness boardwalks for all to enjoy, and refilling many birdfeeders too, the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog has helped protect this area for nature and people alike.

This Winter’s Naturally Avian trips have been filled with many exciting birds… And the Winter is still young! From whirlwinds of vibrant Pine Grosbeaks and Evening Grosbeaks feeding up close, to inquisitive Canada Jays, sneaky Boreal Chickadees, and of course majestic owls, there’s so much to explore and enjoy while out birding in Minnesota’s Northwoods. Beyond the vast birding hotspot of Sax-Zim Bog, we’ve also had focused study of Spruce Grouse, crossbills, and more in the Superior National Forest. The beautiful wintering Iceland Gulls, Great Black-backed Gulls, and Glaucous Gulls have been enjoyed right here in the Duluth harbor as of recently, too. Here are a few moments from the past few weeks.

Out of COVID-19 precautions, we take separate vehicles and wear masks while birding. The spotting scope and tripod is sanitized between trips, and sanitized walkie talkies are offered for keeping in touch while commuting.

Today's birding trip took place at Sugarloaf Cove, a scenic and peaceful wilderness area located up the incredible North Shore of Lake Superior. Last night light southwest winds carried migrating birds through the vast landscape of northern Minnesota, but little did we expect early-morning fog to sock in the view from shore. These conditions concentrated an amazing kaleidoscope of warblers, flycatchers, grosbeaks and more on and around the beach. It was breathtakingly bittersweet to witness. Despite the gloomy conditions, the birds along the shoreline rocks were gorging on recently-hatched flies and seemed to be faring well!
