Announcing our Keynote Speaker: Dr. Jamil Zaki

Strong communities are built on connection, empathy, and neighbors who actively show up for each other.

That's why we’re excited to announce Dr. Jamil Zaki, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and bestselling author of The War for Kindness and Hope for Cynics, as our keynote speaker for the 15th Annual Closer to Home Luncheon, sponsored by Airbnb.

Dr. Zaki’s internationally acclaimed research on empathy, cooperation, and community-building has inspired millions worldwide. His award-winning insights remind us that the first step to making change a reality is believing that it's possible.

Early giving for is open.

When Kim Donovan moved into Bellwether Housing, she was skeptical. She had heard the stigma around affordable housing, but she needed to maintain her independence while managing MS. What she found was something she hadn’t expected: community, dignity, and a place to call home.

Now, 20 years later, Kim lives in an ADA-accessible unit, walks her dog Gibbs through the neighborhood she loves, and leads a local MS support group. She's also a monthly donor to Bellwether, giving back to the organization she says changed her life.

When you give to Bellwether, you help make stories like Kim’s possible.

Bellwether Housing is deeply saddened by the loss of Democratic Rep. Frank Chopp—a fearless architect of change who reshaped housing across Washington State. Frank devoted his life to the conviction that every person deserves dignity, stability, and hope. Under his leadership access to affordable housing expanded statewide, opportunities for homeownership grew in historically marginalized communities, and crucial support was secured for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Frank's unwavering dedication to justice and equity transformed lives and communities, and his impact will endure for generations.

The Foundation's Evergreen Impact Housing Fund (EIHF) released a video that features one of our buildings and tells a resident's story. Jump to 1:20 to see the section about The Aries and hear from Kayla S. (Aries resident).

The Aries is the first project funded by EIHF to open to residents, proving that innovative financing can boost the supply of much-needed housing. EIHF provided patient and low-cost catalytic capital for The Aries which, paired with more traditional financing sources, allowed the project to move forward on time and efficiently.

"We know that the single most reliable predictor of homelessness is the cost of housing, and we've been suffering from a major housing affordability crisis in Washington and throughout the country, so the spigot is constantly turning up."

According to a HUD report, Washington state had the third largest homeless population in the country in 2024, with 31,554 people experiencing homelessness.
