Save Our wild Salmon is deeply grateful for the remarkable efforts of the first responders and the coordination and leadership of Washington and Oregon Governors, local, state and federal leaders, and communities fighting the devastating fires across our region. Our hearts go out to all of our community members impacted by the fires in Spokane and throughout Colville, Yakama Nation, and Warm Springs lands.

We will continue to find meaningful ways to support communities as they work to recover and rebuild, and we will stay steadfast in our commitment to address the impacts of the ongoing climate crisis, protecting our lands, waters, salmon–and supporting each other!

‼️ The third annual Salmon Life Cycle Pedalpalooza Ride is rescheduled to next Tuesday, August 11 ‼️

Safety at the Salmon Life Cycle is our top priority. Due to the high temperature forecast along with the unhealthy AQI in Portland, postponing is the best option. Our thoughts are with all of those across the Northwest and beyond who are impacted by the fires.

🚲Event Details: We’ll ride at a relaxed pace from Laurelhurst Park to the Salmon Street Springs and back, with brief stops along the way - including a popsicle break! Along the route, we’ll hear from the folks at the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.

Meet at 5:30 pm – Laurelhurst Park (Portland, OR)
Ride at 6:15 pm – Out-and-back route, ~5 miles, relaxed pace.

🎨 We're excited to highlight another of the artists who made the Get Out the Vote campaign possible: Kat Martin (Killerwhaleartist)

🖌️ Kat Martin is an artist partner with Northwest Artists Against Extinction, and is based in Mount Vernon, WA. She moved to the Pacific Northwest from Nevada in 2021, with hopes of pursuing her dreams of becoming a marine naturalist, artist, and ocean advocate. She has since opened her own business and received her marine naturalist training.

🐟 As you can tell by her artwork, Kat has a special affinity for killer whales. “All That Remains,” artwork featured on one of the Get Out the Vote posters, tells the harrowing story of the starving and dwindling Southern Resident orca population.

🗳️ For residents of Washington State, ballots in the primaries are due tomorrow! Drop yours off in an official ballot dropbox before 8pm on August 4. For non-Washingtonians, visit wildsalmon.org/vote for information on registering to vote and to take SOS’ pledge to vote!

🗳️Drop your ballot in an official ballot dropbox by 8pm on August 4 to ensure it gets counted. Experts recommend against mailing it in when possible. You can find a dropbox near you at Vote.WA.gov and track your ballot by texting VOTE to 868392. If you have to mail it, make sure it is postmarked by August 4!

✍️The deadline to register to vote online or in the mail for the August primaries has passed! You must now register to vote in-person if you haven’t already.

🎥🎬 We are overjoyed to officially announce that The River Remembers, a new film by Setting Sun Circle, will be screened at Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment's Free the Snake Flotilla! This film (plus two short films) will be screened outdoors at Hells Gate State Park along the banks of the Snake River as the sun sets on Friday evening.

🏞️ 📣 The River Remembers is a powerful documentary following Indigenous leaders on the Elwha and Klamath Rivers as they lead the two largest dam removals in U.S. history. Through the stories of Vanessa Castle (Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe) and Frankie and Molli Meyers (Karuk Tribe), the film reveals how decades of grassroots organizing, cultural responsibility, and tribal leadership helped restore salmon and free rivers that had been blocked for nearly a century.

🏞️ The River Remembers is a character-driven documentary by Setting Sun Circle that follows Tribal members of the Elwha and lower Klamath Rivers as they lead the largest dam removals in U.S. history, restoring salmon and renewing culture after a century of struggle. The film is a story of resilience and hope, showing that when rivers heal people heal too.

🖌️ Shiloh is an artist partner with Northwest Artists Against Extinction and is based in Bellingham, WA. He created “Generational Wealth in Salmon,” with colored pencil, rapidograph technical pen, KOH-I-NOOR Black, and Iwata Airbrush.

🐟 Shiloh is a chef and activist, advocating for only eating seasonal ingredients to build healthy foodway systems and “share Indigenous food knowledge in this ever-changing world.”

📚 Join SOS and 350 Spokane for our next Book Club!

For this month, we’ll be reading “As Long As Grass Grows”, by Dina Gilio-Whitaker. The book tells "the story of Native peoples’ resistance to environmental injustice and land incursions", and calls on environmentalists to learn from the Indigenous community’s rich history of activism. The author, Dina Gilio Whitaker (Colville Confederated Tribes), is the policy director and a senior research associate at the Center for World Indigenous Studies.

All are welcome, whether you’ve read the book or not. No RSVP needed. We hope to see you there!
