Indian Park School House Association

Indian Park School House Association In the late 1800s, a handful of families homesteaded in the mountains of western Douglas County, Colorado. The school was deeded to the school district in 1885.

IPSHA unites the community in a multitude of positive social efforts, while actively preserving the Indian Park School House, its grounds and pioneer cemetery, and the history of western Douglas County’s mountain communities. The nearest school was too far away for local children to attend, so the community banded together to solve the problem. In 1884, the community built a one-room school house

on a one acre parcel provided by William Smith. Teachers were brought in from afar and boarded at local homes. Children walked and rode horses over long distances to attend school. In the winter, many traveled by two-runner sled. Most years, the school had a dozen students of various ages, but some years attendance dwindled to a single pupil. Over the years, the school had many a name, including Brown’s School, Mountain School, Jarre Canyon School, and finally, Indian Park School. In 1959, Indian Park School House was one of the very last rural schools to close in Douglas County. In 1978, the school was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Today, as yesterday, the school serves as the hub of the mountain community. This neighborly knack for collaboration finds local residents dedicated to ongoing community connection and the upkeep of the school site.

After months and months IPSHA has a small update on our current situation. If you have no idea what we are speaking of let us update you quickly.
About 3 years ago IPSHA was contacted by our neighbor inquiring about replacing the current barbed wire fence between our property and theirs. They believed the fence was incorrectly placed and was in fact on their property. With a lot of conversations between both parties and the county we realized that the property lines are off from what we have been using as our property and what the county shows as our property. You see, our deeded property descriptions date back to the original deeds in 1885 and 1900! Since then, the corner markers have changed, large properties were divided into smaller ones, but the schoolhouse property descriptions never changed. We sought legal help in this situation as it is a 140 year old problem. The lawyer was recommended by the county as the best real estate lawyer in Douglas County, with knowledge and experience in property line issues. He agreed to not only mediate the issue with us and the other property, but to do so with an eye to mitigating costs. We began to actively fundraise!
First we had a survey of the property with old fence lines/property we have been using versus the county recorded lines. Then we had a valuation of the “difference” land. All of this takes time and conversations between both parties and the lawyer. This also takes money. We discovered that there was ½ acre difference between what we had thought was our property line and what the county deemed our property line.
Now we begin negotiations with the other party to try and come to an agreement with how best, for both parties, to fix this situation. Back and forth we go. Our negotiations finally broke down 2 weeks ago.
We have to file a lawsuit to get a court involved to fix this situation. The court process could take 12-18 months. We really have tried everything. We felt it was in our community’s best interest to not only stand up for what is ours but to fix a situation that 50 years ago when the Association purchased the property from the School District we didn’t know existed. We also want to be good neighbors to the other parties. All of this takes time, so be patient. Yes, another 12-18 months patient. Come to our posted meetings on this page. We update as we get information. We really wanted this to come to an out-of-court resolution. It just wasn’t feasible even with a lawyer.
Why do you not see updates on Facebook? Because we are in an active negotiation that is leading to a court filing. We have and will continue to provide updates at our quarterly meetings and at all schoolhouse events.
Thank you all for your continued support. Come to the Valentine’s Dinner, come to meetings, we don’t like to post updates to social media because it is not advised from our legal counsel.

The Schoolhouse Association has been working non-stop to resolve this situation at the same time still creating community events. We can’t do it without you. Thank you for your continued support. Our next meeting is in March. Please plan to attend.
