Turn Around Don't Drown PSA

Turn Around, Don't Drown

Never attempt to cross floodwater, whether on foot, by swimming, or in a car or SUV. Flooding causes more deaths in the United States than any other thunderstorm-related hazard.

When driving:
Avoid areas that are already flooded, and areas that are subject to flooding. Seek higher ground. The depth of water is not always obvious. The roadbed may be washed out, leaving a deep pit. Never try to drive through swift water. Never ignore barriers that warn of flooded or dangerous roads!

Congratulations Dave on your retirement! Thank you for your partnership and commitment to the citizens of Clark County!

Today we celebrated Dave Barton and his 38 years of service to Clark County REMC. Dave Barton, Manager of Operations and Engineering, retired at the end of 2022. Barton started his career with REMC as a groundman and then was given the opportunity to be an apprentice lineman in 1985. His drive to continue training and learning didn’t stop in 1989 when he became a lineman. He continued his education, eventually earning him an associate degree from Purdue in Electrical Engineering Technology. In 2000, Barton became the Operations Supervisor, which led him to the role from which he is retiring, the Manager of Operations and Engineering. Dave plans to enjoy small trips with his wife, Vickie, spend time with kids and grandkids, finish projects around the house, and catch up with old friends and retired REMC employees/friends. Looking back on the past 38 years, Dave stated, “Every position that I have had over the years has been the best. My career has been very rewarding. I have had the privilege to work with some amazing people that all want to do what is best for the members of REMC. I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life, and I have no worries that REMC will continue to do what is best for the members because that is what we always strive to do.” REMC wants to wish Dave all the best in the future and thank him for all that he has done over the past 38 years.

Statewide Tornado Drill March 14th at 10:15 a.m.

Every Hoosier business, school and family should participate in the statewide tornado drill. The drill allows you to practice where to go, what to do and what to take so you are prepared in the event of a real tornado warning.

At about 10:15 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, March 14, NWS will issue a test tornado warning alert, which will be shared through most notification systems, including the statewide Emergency Alert System (EAS). You will only receive this alert if you have test notifications enabled on your device. The outdoor warning sirens will also be activated.

Wherever you are at the time, practice your tornado safety plan. There will be no follow-up alerts issued by the NWS to mark the end of the statewide tornado drill. It ends when your business, school or family feels that you have adequately practiced your safety procedures.

Tornado Safety Reminders

Have a location designated as your safe spot regardless of what kind of building you are in. A basement or storm shelter is best, but an interior room, stairway or hall without a window or door to the outside is acceptable.

Use a helmet, blanket or mattress as protection for your head and neck. This protects the most vulnerable parts of your body from flying debris.
Consider how you would be alerted if there were an actual tornado warning. Sirens are meant to be heard outside and cannot be relied on if you are indoors. Having a NOAA weather radio or weather alert app is recommended.

As always, you can text “ClarkWxAlerts” to 226787 to receive emergency weather alerts from Clark County.

03/13/2023

Isolated light snow showers will be possible tonight, especially in the Lexington region. A few showers could put down a light dusting and create some slick spots on roads in the chilly air.

03/11/2023

Most will just see rain tonight, but rain could briefly mix with or change over to snow across portions of northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. Above-freezing ground and air temperatures should help prevent significant impacts, and any light snow accumulations should melt quickly after precipitation ends Sunday morning.

With all the damage from the winds there’s a very good chance we won’t be around on regularly scheduled days. The bigger piles will take us longer to get. Please be patient as we still have all of our regular day to day jobs that have to be done also."

Slide repair planned east of Charlestown on S.R. 62 in Clark County

Clark County — Indiana Department of Transportation contractor E&B Paving, Inc. is expected to begin work next week on S.R. 62 in Clark County. Beginning on or after Wednesday, March 8, crews will start tree clearing operations ahead of a slide repair project located approximately three miles east of S.R. 3 (Market St) in Charlestown. Tree removal will take place under flagging operations.

Following tree clearing, S.R. 62 will be reduced to one lane and flagging will continue as needed for utility work relocation. This work is expected to last until late summer.

Beginning in early June, S.R. 62 will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals as crews begin work to stabilize approximately 200 feet of hillside and roadway with a dual-level soil nail wall. The signals will control traffic through the work zone and are anticipated to remain in place through late November. The contract was awarded to E&B Paving, Inc. for $1.1 million.

INDOT reminds drivers to use extra caution, avoid distractions, and consider worker safety when traveling through active construction zones. All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.

So much has been accomplished, and there is still more to be done. However, this kind of work is too dangerous to do without rest, so our crews will soon be wrapping up their second 15-hour day. We sent calls earlier this evening to those who we thought we couldn't restore today, so they could make plans for another night without power. We have a plan ready for tomorrow and hope to have the last 50 or so members back on by late afternoon.

We can't thank you enough for your patience and understanding. Let's finish strong tomorrow and put this storm behind us.

Clark County public safety agencies responded to 140 weather related calls yesterday (3/3) and continue to respond to weather related incidents across the county today (3/4).

Throughout the day and night, these agencies responded to reports of:

* Trees on structures
* Traffic hazards (downed trees)
* Power lines down
* Flooded roadways
* Water rescues

There are currently 1,235 customers without power across the county as of 5:10 pm (3/4). Utility companies are working to restore these outages and have called in additional resources to reduce the restoration time.

Damage assessments were also conducted across the county today by our agency with the assistance of Floyd County Emergency Management. This information has been documented and shared with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the National Weather Service. If you have damage to your home, please document it for insurance purposes and send a photo, along with the location, to [email protected].

We would like to thank all of our public safety agencies, utility companies, and road departments who continue to work to recover from this weather event.

Outages have started as this storm pushes through our area. Please report your outages, even if you think your neighbor has already reported it.
