YLI Central Valley

YLI Central Valley YLI builds communities where young people and their adult allies come together to create positive social change.

The Youth Leadership Institute is also a collaboration with the California Friday Night Live Partnership that seeks to build relationships with young people to build healthier communities. The Youth Leadership Institute is building communities that invest in youth! Who are we?

- The Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) is a youth development organization that uses a social justice lens to support you

ng people in building healthier, more equitable communities. What do we do?

- As a leader in the field of youth development, YLI is building the skills of young people to identify and influence public policy and create positive community change. Over the past year, YLI has supported 34 youth-led policy, advocacy, and media campaigns.

- Focusing on education, health equity, environmental prevention, and economic security, YLI is cultivating engaged and dynamic young leaders today in order to create a more equitable and sustainable society tomorrow.

- Our model is grounded in a youth development framework that employs evidence-based approaches and emphasizes the importance of healthy adult-youth partnerships.

91% of youth respondents surveyed agreed that they “had the opportunity to build and practice skills in my program.”

Where do we work?

- For over 20 years, YLI has sparked the leadership of young people to solve pressing issues in their communities. With offices in San Francisco, San Mateo, Fresno, and Marin, YLI is positioned to connect the San Francisco Bay Area and California’s Central Valley.

- YLI also has a national reach, providing capacity-building support to 83 organizations and groups across the country through our National Consulting Services in 2012-13.

81% of youth agreed that, “my program has helped to create some type of positive change in our community.”

Who do we serve?

- YLI engages historically-marginalized youth in becoming civic leaders. Currently, 92% of youth served by YLI are people of color, and nearly 60% are from low-income backgrounds.

- Since its founding, YLI has worked with over 80,000 young people in over 200 communities nationally and abroad. Learn More!

Good morning YLI Friends,
Yesterday evening three members from our Selma FNL Chapter advocated for an ordinance called the Lee Law that challenges our communities to look to other alternatives that benefit the health of our neighborhoods by reducing the amount of alcohol and to***co product advertising. They shared the podium with adult-allies from Fresno County's Department of Public Health to talk about their experience as a young person living in Selma and the challenges that young people face in their community.

These young people are also excited about their upcoming Social Norms Campaign where they like other young people stretched across Fresno County are Showing Their Sober Swag.

Good morning YLI friends!

Check out this awesome coverage of our YLI BMoC rockstar, Cesar, representing the youth of Fresno and local social justice efforts to improve youth and police relationships.

While there is obvious distrust between young men of color and police in Baltimore, a youth leader in Fresno says relations between those groups are improving here.

Good afternoon YLI friends,

With his family and members of our community, we had the honor of celebrating one of our amazing youth leaders, Zachary Shaath of Edison High School (Fresno, CA) as Youth Volunteer of the Year at the Hands Across Volunteer Awards. His involvement as a youth-leader in our Chapter and YLI’s Fresno Building Healthy Communities (BHC) Chapter has launched his ability to lead with his peers to address and change the damaging norms around underage drinking. Zach has been a leader in communicating to his classmates the root causes of underage drinking and how they could come together to create communities that support healthier decisions. Currently, he and a group of friends are organizing a that includes workshops important to students and relevant to their lives.

Zachary continues to lead in partnership with and has a sincere desire to improve his community and develop himself as a compassionate leader.
