📖The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is an independent agency of the United States federal government. It is the main source of federal support for libraries and museums within the United States.

Across the United States, child and teen literacy rates are on the decline, but in 2025, Suffolk County saw an increase in summer reading participation by school aged children and teenagers. Without federal funds from IMLS, summer reading programs that help foster youth literacy could be negatively impacted.

It’s clear that Suffolk County’s young readers and their caregivers are taking literacy seriously, which is why it’s so important that Congress continue funding libraries.

🛜The FCC's E-Rate program makes telecommunications and information services more affordable for schools and libraries. E-Rate provides discounts for telecommunications, Internet access, and internal connections to eligible libraries and schools.

E-Rate makes connectivity sustainable, predictable, and helps to ensure libraries maintain secure networks. Cutting E-Rate only starves libraries of needed resources to serve my community.

Congressional support for IMLS and E-Rate translates to support for their constituents—especially young readers.

📞Contact your elected officials and tell them why IMLS and E-Rate matter to you!

From now through August 28, please stop by to participate in the “Tell Congress Not to Defund Libraries” campaign. Take action for libraries by reminding your Senators and Representatives on both sides of the aisle how important libraries are to the residents of Suffolk County.

Visit the table in our Lobby to fill out a postcard which we’ll deliver to your to local representatives urging them to support funding for libraries by protecting IMLS (the Institute for Museum and Library Services) and E-rate, both of which directly impact our local libraries.

📖The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is an independent agency of the United States federal government. It is the main source of federal support for libraries and museums within the United States.

IMLS supports and funds many of the crucial community services libraries provide; things like e-books, summer reading, cultural programming, technology, job and career resources, and funding for critical library infrastructure projects. Cuts to IMLS could put these services at risk.

🛜Library connectivity can be a lifeline for students, families, veterans, small businesses, jobseekers, and older adults. As technology increasingly transforms the way we work, connect, and learn, our communities rely on public libraries for access more than ever. E-Rate makes that connectivity sustainable, predictable, and helps to ensure libraries maintain secure networks. Cutting E-Rate only starves libraries of needed resources to serve my community.

Thanks to E-Rate, libraries can afford the connectivity to provide life-changing services. When Congress created E-Rate in the 1990s, most libraries and schools had little or no internet access. Today, nearly every library and school in the country has a high-speed connection.

📞Contact your elected officials and tell them why IMLS and E-Rate matter to you!
