It seems that each year of late during The Bondville Fair weekend, I receive a new little intake, and this year is no different.

I received a call last Saturday morning from a kind gentleman who said that their barn cat had deposited a little squirrel on their front porch. Not knowing where the nest might be, he thought the little one needed help and reached out to Monty's House.

The little fella of a red squirrel is still eyes closed so he is less than 5 weeks old, and he had some knicks and scrapes from his cat capture. He weighed in at 29 grams but over the last few days has packed on some mass and now is up to 36 grams!!

Last year's fair weekend intake was a little flying squirrel who was named Rosie, after my People's Choice winning quilt. This year's naming is a two-fer because this little red receives the name of my Challenge winning quilt, which also happens to be the same name as his finder!! Please say hello to Bernie - Welcome to Monty's House 🐿πŸ₯‡

PS - Bernie has been reunited with two siblings who arrived here on Monday ala the same cat, and in the same manner, so once they have settled and stabilized, you will meet them too 🐿🐿

Who is an AWESOME opossum ........ Finnegan, that's who!!!

I was honored, humbled, and so surprised that if I had 50 teeth like Finnegan, you would have seen them all in a jaw drop when I was awarded the People's Choice Ribbon for my quilt "Feisty Finnegan." There were just about 80 quilts in the Quilt Hall, and so much amazing talent of local quilters, I honestly did not think I had a shot at People's Choice, but Finnegan pulled it off with his toothy grin and captivating gaze. Finnegan has one more stop at Bennington QuiltFest in a few weeks, and then he will be getting released to his new home because he also SOLD!!

This is my 2nd year in a row winning the People's Choice Ribbon; I won in 2025 with "We Can Do It," which was Rosie the Riveter, and this year with Finnegan. Opossums are often misunderstood creatures, but I am thrilled that this weekend in the Quilt Hall, people clearly adored Finnegan.

It was another great year at The Bondville Fair, with two ribbons received and four quilts selling with those net proceeds from sales benefitting Monty's House (photos in the comments). Thanks for a great 2026, and we will see you next year, Quilt Hall πŸͺ‘🧡

Feisty Finnegan is quilted, bound, finished, and will be on his way to The Bondville Fair Quilt Hall tomorrow to be ready for the fair's opening day on Friday. Finnegan is my only wildlife entry this year, but he is the largest quilt I have as an entry, finishing off at 28" x 30".

I have 9 quilts entered in Bondville although one of my entries, VOTE πŸ—³, maintains seven different versions, all are for sale at $20.00 each, and all proceeds from the sale of the VOTE quilts will benefit the Winhall Industrial Society, our hosts of the Bondville Fair. The VOTE quilts are 14" x 7", come with a dowel installed to hang on the wall, and a photo of one if the iterations is in the comments.

And speaking of voting, if you are headed to the Bondville Fair this weekend, stop in and see us at the Quilt Hall because Finnegan would love your VOTE for People's Choice πŸ₯‡ See you at the fair!

Bilbo Baggins & The Storm Crew moved to the backside release pen yesterday, and they were having a blast last evening exploring their new digs. They will spend three weeks out in the pen, and then will be off to the wild, giving them plenty of time to find housing and food sources before the winter arrives πŸ–€

What a difference two months makes!! Intake on June 7th to recent week August 17th, one of the members of Bilbo Baggins and the Storm shows you how they have grown. The group has been enjoying their larger enclosure on the porch, and we have our eye on an early fall release πŸ‚

Camper and her two-thirds tail are out in the release pen!! Morris will be next up to move to the back side release pen since Baby Squirrel and Mountain Girl were released last week, and Bia moved into a double decker cage in the rehab room. BIG moves being made in the rehab journeys of our Monty's House critters πŸ’—

Earlier this week, I was in an exam room at West Mountain Animal Hospital getting discharge paperwork and instructions for a new domestic addition to the feline crew here (photo in the comments), and looked up to spy something very familiar on the wall.

Monty's House is representing in exam room #4 😁

Nugget!!!!! She arrived as an eyes closed baby at the beginning of July, and just over a month later, she has been moved to a big kid cage in the rehab room and enjoying an evening peanut snack. Those squirrelly kids grow up so fast!!

We had some releases last weekend and Sodapop, Rumi, and Little Lelia have hit the treetops along with red squirrels Pepper, Paprika, and Penelope. While I did not see anyone leave the release pens (they took their darn sweet time), and no one has come back to the release pens to bunk down, I have seen Sodapop, Rumi, and Little Lelia around and enjoying their nuts and seeds, and the trio of reds have decided to explore within a wider radius and make themselves scarce, which in on par with red squirrel behavior in my experience.

All six who came in as littles needing help did really well in rehab and are out living their best squirrelly lives. Wishing them much love and continued safe travels as they find their way out where they belong - Welcome home to the wild πŸ’—
