Save the Shaw Store Join us in a community-led effort to purchase the Shaw Store and landing property and ensure it continues on for community benefit in perpetuity.

Dear friends of the Shaw Store,

For the Save the Shaw Store team and its many helpers, the last seven months have been a whirlwind of community outreach, fundraising, and research. We have worked to form a nonprofit and toward purchasing the Shaw Store, marina, and warehouse, as well as toward assuming the contract with Washington State Ferries to run the Shaw ferry terminal. Our vision for this project includes the Orcas Food Co-op operating the store year-round, the property’s living spaces serving as reasonably-priced rentals for store and ferry workers, and our keeping the post office in place.

Throughout this process, our group has remained committed to our local community owning the property through the Save the Shaw Store nonprofit. We believe that such ownership is in the community’s best interests: The store and larger property would no longer be subject to the needs of any one individual or family, and working with the Orcas Food Co-op offers a more financially sound approach for a small store such as ours.

The Save the Shaw Store team has done a tremendous amount of due diligence. We have collected almost two gigabytes of documents including:

- inspection reports
- financial reports
- surveys
- histories and current status of the septic and water systems
- permits
- proposals for needed work, including shoring up the pilings beneath the warehouse and completing the renovation of the marina
- specific projects for bringing the store property up to code.

That information helped us shape a detailed business plan (which included financial projections for future operations). This business plan helped solidify the Orcas Food Co-op’s willingness to partner with us, as they want to work only with a sound nonprofit (instead of with a private owner who could sell the property at any time). The business plan also helped us understand the purchase terms that would allow our nonprofit to sustainably and responsibly own and oversee the property without the need for ongoing fundraising.

Based on that business plan and what we learned from the community about realistic fund-raising possibilities, we recently drew up and presented to the Masons a comprehensive letter of intent.

Sadly, we write to tell you that the Masons have decided that they and we are too far apart. Throughout the whole process, we have all valued open communication and an amicable relationship, and although we cannot reach a mutual agreement, we are grateful to the Masons for their time and effort.

At this point, the Masons have asked us to stop negotiations.

What does this mean for you, our supporters?

If you wrote us a check for the Due Diligence Fund, know that — although we conducted a substantial amount of due diligence and inspections — we paused just before several expensive reports; we also had much work donated. And so we did not cash any of the checks you sent us. If you would like your check returned, please let us know; otherwise, we will tear them up.

To all who donated or pledged, thank you. To those who sent encouraging notes, thank you. Your support so buoyed us through all the work we have done, and we were truly excited to keep working with you.

This project has been so sweet, as we all envisioned the store and the surrounding property continuing to be deeply embedded in the island community. We still believe that community ownership of the store, marina, warehouse, and WSF ferry contract is the best outcome possible. We appreciate so much the support we continue to receive from you. We will never be able to thank folks enough for their donations of time and expertise, for all the good wishes, and for all of the care that exists for Shaw as part of the whole island community.

Your support for this dream has kept us going through many long meetings, phone calls, and hours on the internet. Even though our efforts to this point have not succeeded, we hope you will help keep alive the vision of a community nonprofit owning a year-round store, owning the ferry contract, and maintaining the post office space, a community marina, community spaces in the warehouse, and living spaces with rents affordable to those who work in the store and on the ferry.

If anything happens to revive this project, we will let you know. (If you wish to be removed from our email list and not receive future communications, please let us know!)

We wish the Masons all good luck going forward, and we thank them for trying to make this all work.

Deeply moved by the community’s enthusiasm and support,

Jen, Julia, Learner, Anne, Brad

Dear friends and neighbors,

Every spring, right about now (and it is indeed happening right now), the humming bees in the blooming tree between the Shaw Store and the warehouse make everyone laugh and sigh for the beauty.

During the past weeks leading up to the bloom, your Save the Shaw Store team had been in frequent and long discussion with the Masons. We have all been working to put together the pieces of this grand project that is made up of even more bits than the blooming tree!

We thank the Masons for their patience, willingness to listen and be flexible, and desire to keep the Shaw Store in the island community.

Within a very few weeks, we hope to have more — and more concrete — news to share with you. In the meantime, thank YOU for your patience and on-going expressions of support. We all work toward more blooming!

This is such a wonderful project.

Happy for spring,
Standing happily,

Please join us in welcoming a new board member, Julia Weese-Young. In a turn of unexpected symmetry, Julia, who was born in the San Juan Mountains, now finds herself raising a family in the San Juan Islands. On her way from mountains to islands, she has lived in four distinct bioregions, worked in environmental education and food systems design, run two farmers markets, and attended graduate programs in Landscape Architecture and Sustainable Design. These days, she runs a small landscape design practice but busts out of the studio at regular intervals to work in the garden, sketch in the orchard, and beachcomb with her children. She is delighted to be part of this process of visioning for a community-centered space at the threshold of this beautiful island.

:: UPDATE ::

Dear friends and neighbors, near and far,

The Save the Shaw Store efforts continue, undaunted by rain and snow!

INSPECTIONS
We have had initial building inspections completed for the store and warehouse buildings — and so we give a special shout out to Tim Hance of All Islands Home Inspections, who donated his time and expertise to provide a thorough, well-documented inspection of the buildings.

We also have scheduled inspections for the pilings under the warehouse as well as a roof inspection and an electrical inspection. We have scheduled a commercial appraisal for the property and business. We are learning about the water and septic systems.

FUNDRAISING
We have raised a total of $167,831.00.
This includes 67 separate pledges to the Downpayment Fund, for $153,216.00 — and 30 donations to the Due Diligence Fund, for $14,615.00. These donations and pledges have come from across the islands and all over the country: How energizing it is to see this enthusiastic and wide support for keeping our food sources as local as possible, supporting our neighbors, and keeping the Shaw ferry landing and store a center for the community!

NEW BOARD MEMBER
Please join us in welcoming a new board member, Julia Weese-Young. HAPPY UPDATE!!!!!

ONE
We have now received $105,756.00 in combined pledges and donations.

Since we sent out our initial mailing three weeks ago, sixty-four people have donated $13,715 to the Due Diligence Fund and pledged $92,041 to the Downpayment fund. This more than doubles where we were with our last update, a little over a week ago. And the support continues to come in from across the islands, from across the state, and from many other states.

In addition, many others have let us know they are ready to pledge after they can review our business plan — which we can only complete after inspections — but which is coming!

Thank you to everyone who has donated and/or pledged. Every email you send us or letter we receive in our PO box is more energy, more realization of how widely it matters that the Shaw Store stay, and stay local.

TWO
The generous offers of help – and giving of help — continue.
We have received in-kind help with inspections, fund-raising, legal support – so much island expertise, knowledge, and warmth!

THREE
Property inspections are happening.

Once those are completed, we will be able to fine-tune our business plan, which will help us build on our fundraising efforts and begin to secure the funding we will need in addition to the monies raised toward the downpayment.

You can join the effort by visiting our website www.savetheshawstore.org and signing up on the email list or making a pledge toward our down payment fund. Thank you to all for your support!

Thank you to Ellen and Nick from Old Copper Farm for sharing your thoughts with us! You are an essential part of supplying our community with fresh local food and we are honored to partner with you in this effort!

“We are so thrilled about the prospect of a community owned space with the Orcas Food Co-op operating the Shaw General Store. Old Copper Farm has worked with the Orcas Co-op for the past seven years providing them with our organic garlic and other produce. Learner and the Co-op staff have always been professional, extraordinarily well organized and a joy to work with. As farmers, it is our goal to provide Shaw and our island community with as much fresh healthy produce as possible. Having a well-run store is an important part of that. It is our sincere hope that Shaw continues to have a General Store and we are confident that the Orcas Food Co-op has the expertise and community minded approach to make that happen. Thank you Save the Shaw Store and all of those who have been working so hard to support this effort!”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 24, 2021

Dear friends and neighbors,

Save the Shaw Store has gotten off to a terrific start. Within just a few days of the first public announcement, enthusiastic responses have come from across the islands (as well as from the rest of Washington state, Oregon, California, Nevada, and even Arkansas and Kentucky)!

OUR HIGHLIGHTS
1. Through their donations, seventeen people helped us surpass the $10,000 necessary to complete the Due Diligence Fund!
Along the way, we have received or been promised over $3,000 in in-kind services.

We are now contracting with professionals to do the electrical, plumbing, building, and other site inspections and due diligence that will help us evaluate the current status of the property and determine what repairs or future maintenance may be needed.

We hope to have all reports and answers in hand by the end of February.

2. Many of you have contacted us offering support and encouragement.
We’re hearing a great deal of enthusiasm for the Shaw Store to stay a store, owned by a community non-profit. We are thrilled to report that we already have over $50,oo0 in pledges to our Downpayment Fund. Thank you very much if you have already donated or pledged!

Pledges are an expression of support for this project. These pledges will become actual donations when the final transaction for this property is ready to take place. Please continue to show us your support through pledges as this project takes shape and gains momentum.

We are inspired by all the interest and support!

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?
1. Once the inspections are completed, we can complete our business plan, which will show our projected income and expenses.
2. With the business plan in hand, we will continue the fundraising effort for the $1 million in donations necessary for the Downpayment Fund.
3. When those funds are pledged, we will secure funding for the remainder of the final sales price.

WHERE DO I LOOK FOR UPDATES AND THE LATEST INFORMATION?
We are committed to this process being as transparent as possible. For those signed up on our email list, we will email updates frequently.

You can pledge to the Downpayment Fund, sign up for emails, and check up our regular updates on our website: www.savetheshawstore.org

In the coming days and weeks we will be adding to the FAQ page on our website, as well as posting here. Contract negotiations with the Masons are confidential. However, as we enter the due diligence/feasibility phase, discussions on all of the income sources for the property, including working with the Masons on the ferry contract will follow. All parties are all working together for the benefit of the community and the property. We want to let everyone know that we are carefully working on each issue so that success of the property and the store is assured in perpetuity.
