One more holiday request. If you love holiday decorations and would like to donate decorations for our (distanced) Thanksgiving meal let us know. Our thanksgiving will be served on distanced tables (probably 4 or 5 small tables). We are hoping to have Thanksgiving table cloths, plates, dessert plates, napkins, the nicer plastic ware that looks real and center pieces for tables - maybe fresh flowers that they can take back to their rooms with them after the meal. Christmas at the shelter will be different this year - as it will be everywhere. Because our common spaces are closed we are looking for donations so that residents - singles and families - can decorate their rooms. We are specifically looking for 12" - 36" artificial Christmas trees, small ornaments and lights. We need seven trees and trimmings. We also need 15 Christmas stockings. Empower Run 2020

While home is the safest place for most people right now, victims of domestic violence are not safe at home. Now more than ever, victims of domestic violence need help to find safety. APC has adapted to a tele-medicine model of services so that we can continue to meet the needs of some of them most vulnerable members of our community and our shelter remains open with precautions in place.

After consulting with medical professionals, APC has decided to serve meals to shelter residents in their rooms rather than purchasing groceries for singles and families to cook their own meals in our kitchen. We are looking for individuals, churches or groups who can provide one hot meal once a month until the pandemic has abated. If you would be interested please send us a message through facebook. We have had to reduce our shelter capacity to allow for distancing, so one 9x11 casserole and one or two side vegetables is enough. We look forward to hearing from you.

ProCure Hope, a 501c3 non profit, is a group of professionals who volunteer to fundraise for, source, and donate badly needed PPE to frontline workers. Our focus is on underfunded/overlooked essential shelters, health centers, and at-risk communities.

This week seems to be the week when we set long term policies about distancing and masks at APC. Up until now everything has seemed temporary. Today we set procedures about issuing masks to shelter residents. We will have an ongoing need for cloth masks for adult and child shelter residents. If you or someone you know is making masks and would be willing to donate some to APC please share our information with them. If you would be willing to donate cloth for volunteers to use to make masks for residents please let us know by calling Cathy at 704-487-9325 ext. 115 . This could be a great girl scout, boy scout, VBS or church project!

The latest stimulus bill includes a tax incentive that charities have been seeking since the Trump tax cuts of 2017 hampered charitable giving.

Denim Day April 29,202
On Denim Day, people wear jeans on purpose to protest the myths surrounding sexual violence in all its forms and to signal their support for survivors. Please share a picture of yourself wearing jeans along with information challenging myths like: Myth: A lot of victims lie about being raped or give false reports.
Fact: Only 2-8% of rapes are falsely reported, the same percentage as for other felonies.

APC's forehead thermometer has stopped working. I have ordered one from Amazon but it will not be here for at least ten days. If anyone has seen one in a local store please let me know so I can purchase one. Please share. This is a critical need for APC to monitor symptoms to make sure that our shelter residents and staff remain healthy.

If anyone is making cloth masks and looking for a place that could use them, APC needs masks for our staff. We do not have suspected infections in the shelter at this point, but we are trying to take as many precautions as possible. Please message us if you can help.

While staff members at the Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council are following all social distancing recommendations, they are still at work providing essential services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Cleveland County. While social distancing, working from home, and sheltering in place are necessary measures that everyone should be taking to help control the spread of COVID-19, these measures can make life more dangerous for victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men in Cleveland County. When these victims must stay at home they lose the support and respite from the abuse that the workplace, church, or the gym or other activity outside the home offers. Being isolated at home with the additional emotional and financial stress of this pandemic may increase the incidence and severity of domestic violence. For that reason, and as always, APC will be answering our crisis line 24 hours a day and the APC domestic violence shelter will remain open for victims who are in danger from an abuser.
