Metals Company Will Launch Major Expansion in Cleveland County, North Carolina

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
[email protected]
June 4, 2020

Shelby - Cleveland County, NC - North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced today that Ames Copper Group, a joint venture of Prime Materials Recovery, Inc. (PMR) and the Cunext Group, will create 46 jobs in Cleveland County, North Carolina. The company will initially invest at least $26.3 million with the expansion of its copper manufacturing facility located in Shelby. However, company officials project their total long-term investment could potentially exceed more than $50 million in infrastructure, equipment and working capital over the course of the project to build a new copper smelter plant, which will recycle and purify copper materials.

“As we get North Carolina’s economy moving again, Prime Materials’ decision to expand its Shelby operations is a very positive omen for the future,” said N.C. Speaker of the House Tim Moore. “I commend our local and state leaders for their hard work in supporting the continued success of this impressive company.”

“Congratulations to Prime Materials for the success that has led to this significant expansion,” said N.C. Senator Ted Alexander. “Today’s announcement is exciting news for the people of Cleveland County, who will benefit from these employment opportunities and investment dollars. I had the opportunity to tour the plant while they were planning their expansion and am highly impressed with the great team of leadership and management they have assembled.”

“The manufacturing industry is critical to our success as a nation, and currently, this operation will be the only custom smelter in the United States,” said Bernard Schilberg, CEO of Prime Materials Recovery. “We are excited to be able to build upon our company’s successes and expertise and bring resources back to the United States that create more opportunities for our economy to prosper.”

“In the midst of these challenging economic times, we are thrilled that Ames Copper Group has chosen to expand their operations in Cleveland County,” said Susan Allen, Chair of Cleveland County Board of Commissioners. "The creation of these new jobs will accelerate our community's path to recovery, and also demonstrates the company's confidence in our local workforce."

“The highest compliment our community can receive is when an existing company chooses to expand their operations,” City of Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony said. “Today’s announcement by Ames Copper Group reaffirms the company’s faith in our community’s infrastructure assets, excellent location, and skilled workforce.”

Currently, PMR’s affiliate, IMC Metals America, employs a 76-person workforce that manufactures copper for wiring and lightning rods, as well as, applications in the defense industry. Among the positions Ames Copper Group will create are casting workers, maintenance personnel, supervisors, and administrative staff. The average annual salary for the new positions could exceed $51,700, with a payroll impact of more than $2.3 million per year for the local economy. The current average annual wage in Cleveland County is $40,019. A performance-based grant of $150,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will help locate Ames Copper Group to Cleveland County.

Key partners in the project include the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority, the North Carolina Community College System, Cleveland Community College, Cleveland County, the City of Shelby, Cleveland County Economic Development Partnership, and Duke Energy.

Cleveland County small businesses need our help now more ever. Listed below are some ideas on how we can keep them going. 💚

+Buy gift cards from retailers, restaurants and salons, as this may help ease some of the cash flow issues that these businesses are currently experiencing.

+Although businesses are closed, continue to keep them in your social media feeds. Post photos of these businesses and share/like photos that other people have posted (i.e.,take out pizza from Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille).

+Take a moment to post reviews of your favorite businesses online. It only takes a few minutes to write a review on Facebook, and your review can make a big difference to a small business.

+Continue to order takeout from local restaurants and shop with local retailers online who are offering that feature. Some businesses such as RollOver Pets are even offering delivery of their merchandise to your home. Others may be willing to ship your order directly to you.

🚨 DES has received official guidance on how to implement the three unemployment programs of the federal CARES Act.

👉 They are working as quickly possible to modify their systems to begin the application process.

ℹ️ The federal programs will expand state benefits and offer benefits to anyone not eligible for state benefits and those that have exhausted state benefits.

The programs are:
1️⃣ Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation gives an additional $600/week to those with state benefits;
2️⃣ Pandemic Unemployment Assistance provides benefits to independent contractors, self-employed, church employees and those with exhausted benefits; and
3️⃣ Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation offers up to 13 more weeks of state benefits for those who have exhausted state benefits.

📍 Anyone eligible for federal benefits will see an “ineligible” status if they applied before federal programs are available. This does not make you ineligible for federal benefits.

🔎 More information, including updates on eligibility and how to apply for these benefits will be provided on the DES website at the link below.

Many people in Cleveland County are still working daily to keep our community moving during this crisis. In our video, we are extending a special shout out to manufacturers, first responders, and healthcare workers; however, there are countless other Weeklong Warriors out there that we would like to thank:

+Teachers and bus drivers
+Grocery store staff
+Truck and delivery drivers
+Food service workers
+Convenience store workers
+Assisted living and nursing home staff
+Nonprofit staff and volunteers

Who would you like to add to the list? Do you personally know people who are working on the front lines daily that you would like to recognize? We encourage you to give a shout out to people you see and know who are continuing to serve the Cleveland County community through their hard work.

❓ Seeing a “Pending Resolution” message about your unemployment payment?
👉 That means we're waiting to hear from your former employer.
ℹ️ Click the link at the end of this post for reasons a claim might have "pending resolutions".

🔎 By law, employers have a 10-day period to respond first. No payments are made during this period.

If they don't respond, and you've selected "Coronavirus" as the reason for separation, the system will automatically adjudicate the issue.

If all requirements are met, benefits will be paid, as long as you're completing your weekly certifications. Weekly certifications will be paid retroactively.

The employer will be notified of this determination of benefits by mail. If the employer feels the claim is not valid, they may appeal the determination.
