Great training yesterday for the HRD K9 teams. Seven areas were set up with 0 to 4 sources in an Urban area. Each K9 team had a clean double blind area, then each team rotated doing double or single blinds. Double blinds really help teach you to watch your dog and not rely on the Handler following you, who set up your problem. The K9 teams did great! Young K9 Max has really progressed well and getting nearer to certification. Puppy Smaug did very well searching and tracing odor to source. Long lines were utilized for the front 5 areas, as they were by a street. After training, the team did some fun agility. Good ending to a busy training day. The NCSAR K9 team rocks!!

National Search & Rescue Week — May 16–22, 2026 — Recognizes everyone who respond when others are lost, injured, stranded, or facing emergencies, often in challenging terrain, harsh weather, remote areas, and high-stress situations.

Our SAR members are unpaid volunteers who dedicate countless hours training, prepping, and remaining mission-ready in service to their communities.

This week, please take a moment to recognize and thank all Search & Rescue volunteers, who stand ready to answer the call — day or night! Thank you to all who serve!

A blusterly day for the NCSAR K9s! We were missing three of our team members but still a good training for K9s Puff and Apollo, and Puppy Smaug. The winds provided great challenges for the HR K9s, but they worked through it well. Very thankful for a new subject for K9 Puff to find! Being this is National Search and Rescue week, we salute all those who give their free time to search for the lost and missing. The passion that exudes from NCSAR makes me proud to be a part of this team. "Train like you search"

Fun and challenging day for Area Live Find K9 Puff! She found a Mom and child in 5 acres. She then had a great challenge finding Captain Laurie, who was hiding on top of her green house.. 82 degrees, full sun. Odor was rising up. Puff was not catching odor outside of greenhouse. Puff finally caught odor inside greenhouse. Great challenge! Puppy Smaug had 2 sessions of HRD. She is beginning to work through distractions, such as dogs barking at her and being able to go back to work. As always, train like you search!

John Wehrman, NCSAR #572 -- EOW 04-25-2026

The Navajo County Search and Rescue (NCSAR) Team has lost a great teammate, and friend. 😢 John passed away in the hospital, due to complications from a fall from his horse last week. He was such a kind, and knowledgeable man with integrity, a memorable laugh, and a great sense of humor. He joined NCSAR for all of the right reasons. John dedicated his time to training with the team, and learning the required skills to be an efficient, reliable teammate. He strengthened our resources to help the Navajo County Sheriff's Office, with the lost and missing people of Navajo County. We were all truly blessed to have had him in our lives. John will be truly missed, but forever in our memories.

Beautiful weather, yesterday, for training the HRD K9s! We set up some great problems in a big steel building with 3 sides open. Good challenge with the scent pool! Another area with tractor and front loader and equipment, a cattle shute, and bleacher, all in the same search area. A negative area was thrown in and a baseball field with source for puppy Smaug. Single blinds and knowns. Good mental workout!
