The plaintiffs are not challenging South Dakota’s decision to require citizenship documentation itself. Instead, they say the state has built a system that can leave eligible voters unaware of why they were denied full registration and with no clear path to fix the problem.

Legislative Pages come from all corners of South Dakota. Some go to traditional schools, some are home-schooled. Some are following in the footsteps of friends and family members who were Pages. Others are the first in their circle to serve as a Page. For all the ways Pages are different from each other, they have one thing in common - they all met the requirements to be a Page. Do you? Today is the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. U.S. Supreme Court cases in 2013 and 2021 severely weakened the VRA. In 2026, the Court went even further in Louisiana v. Callais, gutting the law’s last remaining protection against discriminatory election maps that dilute the political power of voters of color. Together, these decisions leave the Voting Rights Act with little to no practical enforcement power. Congress CAN restore it. Learn more at rtvote.org/vraexplainer.
