It has been an honor representing the 16th District. For the past two years, we have battled COVID, gun violence, and worked on many other issues, but because of your support and belief in me, we were able to pass legislation that has improved the lives of residents of our community and all of Illinois. As I move to the next chapter, I will continue to work to improve the lives of seniors and families, and fight to reduce gun violence.

The Protect Illinois Communities Act, which bans assault-style weapons, large-capacity magazines and rapid-fire devices, establishes an anti-gun trafficking strike force, and extends the duration of a Fi****ms Restraining Order from six months to one year, has been signed into law. I am proud of the work we accomplished and grateful to everyone who supported and advocated for its passage. While one step in the right direction, much work remains to be done; we must continue to honor victims with our action to reduce gun violence.

Today I urged an AYE vote on HB5471 to ban assault weapons, large-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire devices, and make other critical changes. I also urged that we do much more to reduce gun violence, which is the number one cause of death of children. We need to:
+ Close the domestic violence gun loophole
+ Require background checks with mandatory fingerprinting done at a local law enforcement agency
+ Improve implementation of Illinois’ fi****ms restraining order (FRO), with and Office of FRO Coordination and the expansion of petitioners to include licensed healthcare providers
+ Provide wrap around services for victims and survivors, such as medical care, mental health treatment, to address the impact of gun violence
+ And much more

Today I stood up for seniors and workers in nursing homes by voting against HB240, which allows a delay of all monetary staffing fines for another 2 years on top of an existing 1.5 year waiver period. We must hold for-profit nursing homes accountable and demand improvement for our most vulnerable.

I am delighted that HB3878 passed both chambers today. There is an urgent need for affordable housing in Illinois. Many extremely low-income renters have few resources for basic necessities, and are at serious risk of homelessness. This bill will help ensure that families with limited economic resources have access to affordable housing.

Earlier this morning, the Illinois House passed historic gun legislation in the "Protect Communities Act." This bill bans assault weapons, large-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire devices, establishes an anti-gun trafficking strike force, and extends the duration of a Fi****ms Restraining Order from six months to one year. Thank you to all the advocates and my fellow legislators from both sides of the aisle.

Religious and community leaders have called on elected officials to act decisively to reduce gun violence. Several of them penned an op-ed published in today's Chicago Tribune calling for bold and comprehensive action during the final days of the 102nd General Assembly. I am grateful for their support, and that of everyone who has contributed to our efforts to make our state safer for all. By passing evidence-based policies to combat gun violence throughout Illinois—in every community—we would be taking bold action to deal with the enormous public health crisis of gun violence. I am grateful to our community leaders for their continued support for my bills; HB2541, HB5535, and HB5859. http://ow.ly/sue650MhP89

Recently I introduced HB5858 which focuses on increasing civics education and elections education in our high schools. This increase in education will, among other components, foster critical thinking regarding electoral communication, the elections process for this State, and identifying and understanding the role of dark money. National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, which takes place every year on the longest night of the winter, remembers unhoused people lost in the past year and recognizes their daily struggle. For the past couple of weeks, my fellow committee members and I held hearings on HB5855, the Protect Illinois Communities Act. While I strongly support and co-sponsored this legislation, I and many of the advocates that testified believe that we need to do more. This is why I introduced HB5535, HB2541, and HB5859; all meant to tackle gun violence through evidence-based policies to protect victims of domestic violence and strengthen the Fi****ms Restraining Order (FRO).

Home care service providers enable families to stay together at home safely and with dignity as they age. The need for home care service providers is growing in the United States and Illinois. Recently, I introduced HB5857 - Building a Care in the Home Workforce Act - to help build up the caregiver workforce that will help seniors stay in their own homes. As we reflect on the one million Americans who have been killed or injured by guns since the Sandy Hook tragedy, it is time to take action. In the last days of the 102nd General Assembly, my fellow legislators and I must honor the victims with action. We must do more. You can view my commentary here:

Earlier this week, legislators began committee hearings on HB5855, the Protect Illinois Communities Act, speaking with gun violence advocates and victims. While I strongly support and have co-sponsored this legislation, I believe that is bill is not enough. As I stated in the hearing, "We're not doing enough," which is why I introduced HB5535, HB2541, and HB5859, all meant to tackle gun violence through evidence-based policies, to protect victims of domestic violence, and strengthen the Fi****ms Restraining Order (FRO). 12/14/2022

Today marks a sad date in our nation’s history. Ten years ago, on December 14, 2012, a gunman fatally shot 20 children and six educators at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. This week I filed House Bill 5859, the Prevent a Gun Tragedy Act, to strengthen our vastly underutilized Fi****ms Restraining Order (FRO) law. The FRO is a tool to reduce violence by removing lethal means from someone who is exhibiting dangerous behaviors. With 55 mass shootings in Illinois in 22, and 620 nationwide, and one million American shot or killed since the Sandy Hook school shooting, we must do everything we can to honor all victims of gun violence with action. Find the text of the bill at this link: https://bit.ly/TextofHB5859. Grateful for the work of experts and advocates at Brady: United Against Gun Violence, Everytown for Gun Safety, Safer Country, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy, Newtown Action Alliance, People for a Safer Society, National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Illinois Alliance to Prevent Gun Violence, and The Network - Advocating Against Domestic Violence.

I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of my colleague Sen. Bennett. I was honored to know him and had tremendous respect for him. This is a significant loss for the legislature but, more importantly, for the Bennett family. My office wishes sincerest condolences to the Bennett family.

This is horrible and unbelievable to write, especially since I talked to him just the other day. But Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup just confirmed Sen. Scott Bennett was pronounced dead around 1:15 this afternoon at Carle Foundation Hospital. He was just 45.

I am excited to participate in the Gun Violence Prevention Summit in Washington, D.C. The conference brings together advocates, researchers, survivors, and policy experts for important conversations on reducing gun violence. We heard from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy, which recently released a report with policy recommendations for Illinois. Implementation of our state's Fi****ms Restraining Order (FRO) law is at the top of their list of recommendations.
