The Niles Township Respite Center offers our unhoused neighbors a welcoming space to shower, do laundry, rest, work with a social worker, and feel valued as people with worth and dignity. In turn, our community is given the opportunity to re-establish itself as a people of deep care, restoring our own dignity and finding strength in connection and service. Tuesday afternoon we came together to offer our clients a lovely Thanksgiving luncheon and to sit together chatting and enjoying the company of each other. Thanks to St. Paul’s Luthern Church for hosting and volunteering. Thanks to our State Legislators for serving and visiting with us. This is the community that I proudly call home.

Don’t trash you pumpkins, SMASH them and keep them out of landfills.

This spooky season, give your pumpkins an afterlife…as compost! 🎃

Bring pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns to the Village’s Skokie Pumpkin Smash composting event on Sunday, November 5, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the northwest corner of Oakton Street and Floral Avenue, across from the Skokie Farmers' Market.

Painted pumpkins are fine, but please remove:
- Candles
- Yarn
- Stickers
- Googly Eyes
- Plastic Ears
- Any non-biodegradable materials

Every pumpkin counts! Help us SMASH our record from last year when 4.5 tons of pumpkins were collected for composting.

Niles Township wishes all those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah a Happy New Year (“shana tovah”). The holiday begins at sunset tonight and ends at sunset Sunday night.

The Jewish New Year festival is held on the first (also sometimes the second) day of Tishri (in September). It is marked by the blowing of the shofar, and begins the 10 days of penitence culminating in Yom Kippur.

This popped up in my memories today. I am, and will forever be, incredibly grateful for the tireless work that the Niles Township Government Food Pantry devoted to feeding those in need during the most desperate days during the Covid-19 Pandemic. A special shout out to our food pantry manager, Tony Araque, and the NTFP crew for their commitment to our mission. They never stop and I couldn’t be more proud.

Thank you to The Greater Chicago Food Depository for naming the Niles Township Food Pantry a “Pandemic Hero” for the services it has offered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Food Pantry Manager Tony Araque and his team, as well as dedicated volunteers, worked to meet the growing needs of our community when food insecurity became an even greater hardship for so many.

Niles Township, working with partners from throughout the Township, ran a pop-up food pantry just as schools closed down and when obtaining food became a greater challenge. During that time, the Food Pantry was serving more people than ever before while working to keep everyone safe.

“The Greater Chicago Food Depository will be forever grateful for your partnership during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Pandemic Hero designation reads. “When our neighbors need you most, you opened your doors to offer food and hope. You are a hero to our community.”

I’m writing this post with longing in my heart. There is a longing to express my gratitude to Jen Ruffner, Priya Amin, and Wendy Katznelson for hosting an opportunity to talk to dear neighbors about the accomplishments of my office as Supervisor, a longing to give thanks to all who came out and then donated and offered to volunteer their time and talents to this campaign, a longing to celebrate a lovely time together, and especially the longing to recognize that this was the last time we all shared the company of our dear friend (and neighborhood dad and grandpa), Ed Agnew. Ed is deeply missed by all who knew him. He is deeply missed by me. He was a converted supporter of township government, as the last photo in this post shows, and his hard-earned support meant the world to me.
I’ll keep working to make you proud, Ed.
