I have closely monitored the re-zoning submissions of the Isadora and Esperanza developments since they first came before the Zoning Commission in May. Throughout this process, I have reviewed the proposals, listened to the concerns of residents, and carefully considered the potential impacts these developments could have on our community.

As Parish President, I will exercise my right to VETO the recent council decisions that would have paved the way for approximately 800 new homes near LA 1077 and Ronald Reagan Highway (U.S. 190) in the Goodbee area.

My responsibility as Parish President is to protect the quality of life of the people who call St. Tammany Parish home. New high-density developments in this area would have placed thousands more vehicles on our already strained state highways and increased drainage concerns in a floodplain.

Over the past several years, we have made record investments in our infrastructure, overhauled our development practices to be more aligned with our citizens’ values, and worked to ensure that growth is managed responsibly. These efforts have been focused on building a stronger St. Tammany for the future while protecting the communities and neighborhoods that make our parish such a special place to live.

I support responsible growth, but it must be balanced with sufficient infrastructure and the needs of our residents. High-density developments in areas with planned, but not yet designed or funded infrastructure improvements, would have undermined the progress we have worked so hard to achieve.

Lady Catherine joined me at the Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon for NAMI Southeast Louisiana, an organization which “helps individuals and families impacted by mental illness, fostering a supportive community and promoting better lives for all.”

The event was well attended by volunteers, community leaders, and public servants from the 9-parish region, including St Tammany!! And I am particularly proud of our own Amy Ybarzabal who was elected Board President for the upcoming term!!

According to forecasts, the impacts from Tropical Storm Bertha to St. Tammany will be minimal.

Our primary concern is still gusty winds, which could lead to power outages, less than one inch of rain and minor coastal flooding around Lake Pontchartrain. As we know too well, weather can change, so please stay aware.

Thank you to the TODAY show for helping us share information. We will continue working to keep our community aware of any possible impacts.

It was a blessing to participate again this year in the annual Covington Community Prayer Breakfast held at St Paul’s School.

We heard inspirational and impactful testimony from Phoenix Bigler, Katie Rose McConnell, and Dr. William Sprague.

This event hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Covington truly highlights the strength, commitment, and generosity of the people of St Tammany.

Tomorrow evening, St. Tammany Parish will join communities across the country in a public reading of the Declaration of Independence as we commemorate this important moment in our nation’s history.
