Village sub-contractors are progressing through our streets and are currently working on Griffith for snow removal. It is a slow, arduous task and we again ask for everyone's patience. Please check this or the webpage for any updates.
We have just received confirmation from Waste Management that they are on schedule for Thursday, December 29th pickup of trash, Green/B recycling and two-item bulk pickup for the Village. All totes and bulk items must be on a level surface- not balancing atop a snowpile! Placement on the driveway aprons always work best under these conditions. They will do the best they can to get everyone tomorrow!
Snow removal update...crews are still working from Harlem westward and are up to Crocker. This is a painstakingly slow process as trucks need to haul snow to the designated dump sites and not on residents front lawns. There are still numerous abandoned vehicles which need to be towed as the crews come across them. If you find it necessary to travel, use extreme caution. Many areas in Buffalo (especially Lovejoy) are impassable. Harlem and Broadway are manageable. Stay safe everyone!
Snow removal crews are working overnight from east to west but the entire Village should be completed in the next 36 hours. There is a single lane pass on each street to allow for emergency access. The travel BAN is in effect for the Town of Cheektowaga and Sloan until 12/27 at 7pm when it will switch to an advisory only. There is still no unnecessary travel. Once again, traditional plowing is NOT POSSIBLE as the snow is too hard-packed and deep. Please check back Wednesday afternoon for any updates on trash, recycling and bulk pickup.
The Village will begin seeing payloaders this morning tackling snow removal at Harlem and moving west. This is an extremely slow process as drifting is 8' in some locations and plows cannot be used. Numerous vehicles are stranded throughout our streets impeding progress and will need to be towed. No, we do not know how long this process will take. The driving ban in Erie County remains in effect. Even if you can get out of your driveway- DON'T!!! Stay home and stay safe. Do check on any vulnerable neighbors. We have not lost electricity but furnace vents may be blocked or water may be frozen.
Thank you to all the emergency responders, highway and utility workers who have spent the last 48 hours and Christmas Day away from their families, working in treacherous conditions in below zero wind chills, restoring power, rescuing stranded motorists and transporting to safety, responding to medical emergencies and so much more. Merry Christmas to all!
This furnace vent was completely covered in a snow drift and we had a neighbor call for help to shovel it out. Please check your vents to run your furnace safely and efficiently! This is swirling snow into areas where we don't usually see it.
There are about 25k people without power in Erie County, most in the City of Buffalo and none in Sloan. The 911 system is overloaded with calls so use it only for a TRUE EMERGENCY- reporting that your cable is out is NOT an emergency. For non-emergencies, please call 716-858-7669. Governor Hochul has authorized some National Guard to be deployed tomorrow morning to assist with the hospitals only at this time. Snow removal will happen after the visibility improves. Remember that all of Erie County is under a driving ban. If you venture out, you will get stuck or ticketed by CPD. Stay inside-it's the safest place to be!
If you are stuck in your car:
-Do NOT leave your vehicle. You can easily become disoriented in the whiteout conditions;
-Run the engine about 10 minutes every hour for heat;
-Clear snow from exhaust pipe;
-Make sure Flashers are ON; and
-Other recommendations below.
A Travel Ban will go into effect for all of Erie County as of 9:30 AM.
The Thruway is now closed in both directions at milepost 436 due to a camper colliding with a power pole, leaving power lines across both Thruway directions.
And so it begins...if any residents in the NYSEG territory (which includes all of Sloan) should see wires down in their neighborhood, please contact 1-800-572-1131 to report the location. Yesterday was trash for the Village and some people have not brought in or secured their totes- flying objects are dangerous for drivers and emergency workers that have to be out on the roads. Stay home, stay safe everyone!
With the pending weather event, our DPW asks that all residents abide by the overnight parking ban so they can adequately clean the streets. If at all possible, keep vehicles in your driveway even during the day so the plows can keep up with snowfall. Throwing or plowing snow into the street is a violation of NYS Law and dangerous for drivers. Let's all be safe!
The Village Christmas Event is planned for Wednesday, December 14th at Village Hall. The Annual Tree Lighting will be at 6:00pm, followed by pictures with Santa, gifts and refreshments. Tickets for the Basket Raffle will be available and all proceeds go towards Sloan Families-In-Need. See you all there!!
A huge shout-out to our residents who called in this odd looking duck on Michael Avenue this morning. After a bit of research, it was determined to be a Muscovy Duck, native to Mexico and South America. Our Highway guys managed to catch it and deliver to the SPCA on Harlem Road. As it is non-native to WNY, it may be someone's escaped pet. Thank you Bob and Ron for going above and beyond the usual Highway responsibilities and saving this little (not so little) guys life.
Our 15th Annual Basket Raffle for Sloan Families In-Need has started! Please stop by Village Hall at 425 Reiman Street to buy some tickets and support this worthwhile event. Tickets are $5.00/sheet of 25, or 5 sheets for $20.00. We have 61 baskets plus a door prize from Mighty Taco, worth over $150.00! Our business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm.
All proceeds stay right in the Village to help our families over the Christmas holiday. Drawing will be on Facebook Live December 21st at 2:00pm. If you know of a family in need who could use a little help this year, please call the office at (716)897-1560 and speak to Debra or Karen.
Village Hall and the Department of Public Works will be closed on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th in observance of Thanksgiving. Trash and A/Gold week recycling will be delayed until Friday. The next two-item bulk pickup is December 1st. On behalf of the Village Board and staff, we wish you and your family a wonderful holiday!
Are you ready for the first storm of the season? Just a few reminders for everyone- Top off the gasoline in your car and have your snow brush handy. Get your shovel out of the garage and keep handy by the back door (no one wants to wade through 24" of snow because you forgot to get it ready). Have flashlights available and a full charge on your cell phone. Enough food staples and medications to last through the weekend? Today's the day to pick up anything you may need. Check on any elderly neighbors and give them a hand with their shoveling and trash totes if you're able. As high winds are also in the forecast, should we experience a power outage, stay away from any downed lines and call NYSEG at 1-800-572-1131. BE SAFE EVERYONE!!
It may be only Tuesday, but the snow is on its way! The overnight parking ban for the Village of Sloan is in effect from 2:00 to 7:00am. Parking is available in Village and Fire Hall parking lots if you don't have enough driveway space. An application must be completed and a pass issued for both lots but is free to residents. Please stop at the Municipal Building, 425 Reiman Street if you need to obtain one.
A few tidbits for 1st of the November...the Village overnight parking ban goes into effect November 15th from 2:00am to 7:00am- not the 1st as the "unofficial" face book page stated. Daylight savings ends this Sunday at 2am, so take advantage of the extra hour sleep by turning back your clocks before bedtime on Saturday evening. The DPW has begun leaf pickup and will continue to do rounds until they're all gone or that nasty snow starts- no need to call us for a pickup. Trash and Gold week recycling will be delayed until Friday, November 25th due to Thanksgiving. TWO item bulk pickup will be Thursday, December 1st and again on December 29th- no pickup in November. GO BILLS!
Trick or Treating in the Village is scheduled for Monday, October 31st. The costume parade will begin at 6:00pm from St. Andrew Church and proceed to the Community Center on Halstead Avenue. Bring your little ghouls, goblins and witches for a treat give away!
Lost dog- Roland and Lovejoy in Sloan. Approximately a 1 year old male, pitbull mix, not chipped or altered. Call the Animal Control in Cheektowaga at (716)686-3525.
NYSEG has reported power outage for over 5200 customers in Cheektowaga, Sloan and Depew. The crews are en route for repair with an estimated time of recovery by 3:15pm.
The Village-wide Garage and Yard Sale will be held this Saturday, August 20th from 8am to 2pm. We will be accepting addresses until Thursday afternoon. The full list of participants and street map will be available at the SuperChargers Concert Thursday evening in Griffith Park, and at Village Hall (425 Reiman St) on Friday and Saturday. The Gierlach Post at 50 Gates St is hosting a basket raffle auction and hotdog sale, as is the Sloan Comfort Care Home at 17 Gierlach Street. Enjoy a day in the Village hunting for bargains- one person's trash could be your treasure!!
Rain, rain go away!!! And...it listened! The Concert scheduled for Griffith Park tonight is on. The Two of Us will be performing music of the Fab Four, the most influential group in history...THE BEATLES!!! Grab a friend, bring your chairs and enjoy another evening hosted by the Sloan Arts Council and celebrate their 20th Anniversary of Concerts in Griffith Park!

This result is why our Erie County Clerk's Zombies Initiative fights to end vacant and abandoned properties throughout Erie County and !
These homes sit neglected in the midst of neighborhoods, deteriorating or falling victim to vandalism or crime. And they bring down property values around them as a result.
Now this property in the Village of Sloan has a new lease on life and is back on the tax rolls. The owner of the gas station next stored bought the property and is currently redeveloping it. This is a huge win for all involved, especially the neighbors. Thanks to Mayor Tom Ferrucci, Village Clerk Debra Smith, as well as the Western New York Law Center, for getting this mission accomplished!
This little guy has been hanging around Celina Street the past 2 days. If you know someone whose bird has flown the coop, let them know!
Sliplining...coming to a street near you! Our contractor, Insituform, has completed extensive televising of our sanitary sewers throughout Sloan. These pictures were of Wagner Street this morning. When they are working in your neighborhood, we ask that you limit the use of water as much as possible (laundry, dishes etc). Also, put the lid down on your toilet and plug drains if possible to limit backsplash and odor (it is harmless). Each house will receive a hangtag on their door several days before the process begins, explaining more details.
Slip lining is the process of inserting sleeves into the main sanitary line and filling with steam/hot water, which expands the sleeve and hardens the material. Then each individual lateral line gets drilled out, allowing the flow again from each house.
Some areas cannot be slip lined as the deterioration of mains is too extensive. These areas will see construction/replacement. Please watch this Official page for more updates!
Electric power is out throughout most of the Village. Per NYSEG, the estimated time for power restoration is 11pm.
