On June 19, 2026, the Snellville Youth Council proudly celebrated and hosted the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Unity Day with an incredible day of commemorating history, culture, and involving the community to learn more about Juneteenth.

Thank you to our students, volunteers, city leaders, performers, sponsors, and community members who made this event possible. Your commitment, leadership, and dedication continue to show what can be accomplished when we come together with a shared purpose.

Daye Kebe was awarded a proclamation by Mayor and Council at its June 22, 2026 meeting for leaving “a lasting legacy on the Snellville Youth Council” and exemplifying “the qualities of an outstanding young leader.”
Kebe faithfully served as a member of SYC from 2022 through 2026 and was elected by his peers to serve as Youth Mayor during the 2024-2026 program years.
The mission of SYC is to promote education in governmental affairs, engage the youth of the Snellville area in civic activities and build practical and effective leadership skills.
After attending a Georgia Municipal Association Youth Symposium and learning about community-building initiatives across the state, Kebe became the student project leader for SYC's Juneteenth Unity Day celebration, helping to advance one of the council’s signature community events.
Kebe graduated from the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology as a member of the Class of 2026 and will continue his academic journey at the University of Georgia as a member of the Class of 2030, where he plans to study applied mathematics and sociology. He was awarded the Princeton Prize in Race Relations in recognition of his commitment to advancing understanding, respect and positive relationships among diverse communities.

Yesterday, the Snellville Youth Council kicked off their final meeting with a team-building challenge that put their leadership and teamwork skills to the test. Using only dry spaghetti and marshmallows, teams were challenged to build the tallest tower possible—but with a twist. Midway through the activity, one student from each team was randomly selected to receive a “crutch” that required them to either stop talking or stop touching the materials. This unexpected obstacle forced teams to adapt quickly, communicate effectively, and find new ways to work together toward a common goal.

The activity served as a reminder that adversity is inevitable, but it does not have to stop progress. As we prepare for our Juneteenth: Unity Day event, we want our students to understand the importance of pushing through challenges, holding one another accountable, and having the confidence to speak up when they notice a teammate beginning to slack or lose focus.

Leadership is not just about taking charge, it is also about encouraging others, stepping up when needed, and ensuring everyone contributes to the success of the team.

The remainder of the meeting was held outside, where students collaborated to map out the final plans for their upcoming event.

On Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Snellville Youth Council spent the day focused on leadership, service, and celebration!

We began the morning with our monthly meeting as student leaders met with their committees to finalize plans for the 3rd Annual Juneteenth: Unity Day Celebration. Later that evening, the council gathered at Parkside at The Grove for our End-of-Year Banquet Dinner.

A special thank you to Freddie D Broome from the Georgia Municipal Association for pouring encouragement into our students, and to Norman Carter Jr. and his wife for celebrating with us.

During the banquet, students were recognized for their commitment to civic engagement and leadership throughout the year. Seniors were also presented with Certificates of Appreciation and Snellville medallions for their dedication to the council.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students and look forward to cheering our seniors on as they walk across the stage!

As we transition into the month of May and celebrate graduation season, the Snellville Youth Council is proud to recognize our outstanding seniors and their accomplishments.

Please join us in congratulating Daye Kebe on receiving the prestigious Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Daye has served as our 2x Student Mayor and has been a dedicated member of SYC for the past four years.

His leadership, commitment, and impact on the organization have been nothing short of remarkable. Daye’s contributions will leave a lasting legacy of excellence within the Snellville Youth Council.
