Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue (SCVSAR) K9 Team is an all-volunteer organization delivering emergency response to those in need across the county’s urban and wilderness areas. Our dedicated members come to the aid of anyone lost or injured wherever they might be. We find children, search for lost people with dementia, mental health issues, and developmental challenges, respond to maj

or disasters, and perform life-saving first aid and CPR. We support the Snohomish County Sheriff and other Law Enforcement Agencies in evidence searches. Our Search and Rescue team is very skilled at helping locate individuals who may wander due to Alzheimer’s, Dementia, TBI, or developmental disabilities. Before reaching a point where wandering occurs, there are some preventive measures you can take.

• Secure Your Home: Install home security systems, door alarms, hidden locks on doors, window sensors, and both interior and exterior cameras.

• Carry Identification: Ensure the loved one carries some form of identification or wears a medical bracelet. This helps others understand their condition and where they live if they get lost and can't communicate clearly.

• Inform Neighbors: Let neighbors and local community members know about the loved one’s tendency to wander. Ask them to notify you immediately if they see the person alone and moving about.

• Label Clothing and Keep a Sample: Place labels in the loved one's clothing for identification purposes. Also, keep a piece of their worn, unwashed clothing in a plastic bag. This can aid search and rescue dogs in finding them.

• Keep Recent Photo or Video: Maintain a recent photograph or video recording of the loved one. An updated picture will help SAR job easier when searching for them.

This July, Snohomish County Volunteer Search & Rescue and Alzheimer's Association, Washington State Chapter would like to raise awareness in our community about the impact of Alzheimer's and Dementia. It is important for family members and friends to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of these conditions to ensure the safety of those affected. During the first quarter of 2024, our Search and Rescue team and SCVSAR noted a significant rise in 9-1-1 calls for missing loved ones. It is crucial for family and friends to be able to identify the 10 early signs of these conditions and quickly alert SAR with essential information about the diagnosis, last known whereabouts, and an updated picture of the missing person to ensure a quick and effective response to prevent them from potential danger.

10 Early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's and Dementia:

• Memory loss that disrupts daily life
• Challenges in planning or solving problems
• Difficulty completing familiar tasks
• Confusion with time or place
• Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
• New problems with words in speaking or writing
• Misplacing items and losing the ability to retrace steps
• Decreased or poor judgment
• Withdrawal from work or social activities
• Changes in mood and personality
