Somerset COA collects donations for Ukraine
By GEORGE AUSTIN
SOMERSET - At the Somerset Council On Aging, they collected blankets, sleeping bags, clothing, non-perishable food and hygiene products to donate to people in the Ukraine.
"Some of the seniors went out and bought nice brand new things," Somerset COA Director Shauna Geary said.
By the time they were done, they had three carloads of donations to send to Lviv, Ukraine to help people who are trying to fight off a war that has been waged on their country by Russia.
The idea to collect donations for the Ukraine came from Michelle D'Allesandro who is a senior aide at the COA, an agency in Somerset that helps senior citizens with social activities, health screenings, transportation and food.
D'Allesandro said she had seen that donations for the Ukraine could be dropped off at Cardi's Furniture in Swansea this past Saturday. She told the Bingo group at the Somerset COA about it and said if they put donations into a cup for her bringing the snacks to their games, she would match the donations for the Ukraine.
"People were so generous," D'Allesandro said. "I got so many donations."
D'Allesandro said the senior citizens donated about $750. She said she looked at the list of items that were wanted to help the Ukrainians and went out and bought blankets, sleeping bags, towels, pet food, personal hygiene products, toys for children, stuffed animals and lounge pants for male and female adults. After she finished shopping, D'Allesandro said people were still giving money to her to help the Ukraine people. She said she donated another $200 to the organization that was helping people in the Ukraine. That organization, Arpin Strong, was matching all donations up to $10,000.
The items were dropped off at Cardi's Furniture in Swansea which was a collection location for the Arpin Strong charity organization that is transporting items to the Ukraine to help people there. D'Allesandro and members of her family brought the donations to the furniture store. D'Allesandro said when she dropped the donations off at Cardi's, there were volunteers of all ages helping out with the work.
"It was so heart warming," she said.
D'Allesandro said she has been watching on the news what has has happened to the Ukrainian people since the Russians first invaded their country. She said she felt helpless, but collecting donations for the Ukrainians was a small way she could help them.
