Call of the Valley

Call of the Valley A documentary film tracing the legendary history of California's Sonoma Valley.

Sonoma Valley Voices from the Past is a labor of love -- more precisely a love of Sonoma Valley. It evolved from a three-way conversation between producer Julie Morrison, historian Bob Parmelee, and archivist Sandi Hansen about how to capture and preserve the beautiful richness of Sonoma Valley's historic legacy. The film features conversations with Parmelee and other legendary figures with longst

anding roots in the community going back several generations. The project encompasses not only the creation of the film but also the digitization and archiving of images from the historic Parmelee Collection which includes several hundred documents, photographs, maps, flags and artifacts representing an astonishing library of treasures dating back to the 1840s.

CALL OF THE VALLEY SCREENING: SUNDAY, JULY 31, 2 PM AT SEBASTIANI THEATER, TICKETS $11. Almost a hundred years after Mexico turned over control of California to the US, there were few Hispanics living in Sonoma Valley. With the introduction of the Bracero program in 1942 Mexican workers slowly began to return to the valley, first as temporary workers and then to bring their families to settle. A tight knit group of Bracero families including the Hermosillo and Velasquez families laid the foundation then for today's thriving Hispanic community. Purchase tickets online at https://www.sebastianitheatre.com/blog/2019/3/19/call-of-the-valley-the-enduring-lure-of-sonoma, $11 or at the door.

SCREENING OF CALL OF THE VALLEY, JULY 31, 2 PM, SEBASTIANI THEATER. Did you know Sonoma played an important role during the Gold Rush? As a stop-off point for supplies, many prospectors stayed in Sonoma on their way to and from the gold fields. Many Sonomans, including Nicolas Carriger (namesake for Carriger Road) and Granville P. Swift (builder of Temelec Hall) made their fortunes either selling supplies or striking it rich in the gold fields. The Gold Rush plus much, much more is captured in Call of the Valley, a sixty-minute film which covers 12,000+ years of history in the valley. The next screening will be Sebastiani Theatre Foundation on Sunday, July 31 @ 2 pm. Join me! Tickets are $11.
