SUTTON COUNTY WEATHER BRIEF
Operational Weather Brief – ICS Style Issued: May 26, 2026 – 0915 CDT
Prepared For: Sutton County Emergency Management
SITUATION SUMMARY
The National Weather Service and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) have highlighted West and South-Central Texas for an active weather cycle beginning this afternoon. Sutton County is positioned under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms today. Atmospheric moisture is surging into the area, shifting the primary hazard profile to severe weather and torrential rainfall.
Concurrently, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for flash flooding is in effect for much of Texas starting today and extending through Wednesday, May 27. This influx of moisture effectively suppresses the recent critical fire threats locally.
WEATHER ALERTS & HAZARDS
Effective: Tuesday, May 26 – Wednesday, May 27
Affected Area: Sutton County (Region 7) and West Central Texas
Primary Hazards:
• Severe Thunderstorms: Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) area tonight.
• Significant Hail: Primary convective threat featuring hail over 2" in diameter.
• Damaging Winds: Strong gusts capable of severe localized infrastructure damage.
• Flash Flooding: Level 2 (Slight Risk) today and Wednesday.
• Tornado Potential: Low, but non-zero convective threat (isolated risk).
EXPECTED CONDITIONS (SUTTON COUNTY)
• Winds: Southerly at 10–15 mph today, with convective wind changes causing sudden erratic shifts and damaging gusts near storm centers.
• Temperatures: Afternoon highs reaching the mid-to-upper 80s; cooling to overnight lows near 65–67°F.
• Precipitation: High probability of storms tonight; widespread swaths of 1–2 inches of rain are forecast, with localized totals over 3–4 inches under training storm cells.
TIMING (SUTTON COUNTY)
Time Expected Conditions
Tuesday Afternoon Scattered initial development; maximum heating priming the environment.
Tuesday Evening / Night Peak Severe Window: Widespread organization into storm complexes with high threat of 2"+ hail and heavy rain.
Wednesday, May 27 Sustained Flood Risk: Rainfall transfers into a multi-region flash flooding threat across Central/East Texas.
OPERATIONAL IMPACTS
Public Safety & Infrastructure Response
• Convective Hazards: 2" hail poses an immediate risk to unshielded personnel and law enforcement vehicles. Field units should pre-identify covered structures.
• Wildfire Risk Decreased: Fire danger rating is low-to-moderate locally due to rain. State Operations continue tracking 11 active wildfires further north/west, with 13 suppression aircraft staged statewide.
Transportation & Hydrology
• I-10 Visibility: Intense, rapid rainfall columns will generate severe visual restrictions and hydroplaning hazards.
• Flash Flooding: Rural low-water crossings across Sutton County will react swiftly to high rainfall rates. Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
• River Systems: River tracking indicates minor to isolated moderate riverine responses inside the region later this week as accumulated rainfall pools.
Emergency Services Coordination
• SOC Status: State Operations Center remains at Level III (Increased Readiness Conditions).
• Warning Coordination: Monitor immediate warning structures with NWS San Angelo as lines form.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE
High Confidence in widespread thunderstorm organization tonight.
High Confidence in large hail and localized street flooding as the primary impact modes.

05/26/2026

Heads up folks...severe weather possibilities for this afternoon and evening for much of West Central Texas, especially areas south of I-20. We are expecting some hit and miss storms this morning, but the main activity arrives for the afternoon and evening as a line of strong/severe storms rolls across the area. Right now we expect the storms to reach San Angelo/Sweetwater/Ozona by 1-4 PM, Abilene/Eldorado/Sonora 3-6 PM, and Coleman/Brady/Brownwood/Mason/Junction by 5-9 PM.

This line of storms will have pockets of big storms in it, with large hail of golf ball to baseball size the main concern along with damaging winds. There is a real tornado threat with these storms as well, especially for areas around Ozona, Eldorado, Sonora, and the southwest Concho Valley.

The line will be moving fairly quickly as it moves across the area, but heavy rainfall is still going to be a concern. Areas that have received heavy rainfall the last 3-5 days can't take much more before flash flooding will occur. Fully expect the creeks, streams, and draws to be running hard and flood many low water crossings, city streets, and other low lying areas as the line moves through.

We will try to keep you updated as we head through the rest of the morning and see if anything changes.
