Academy Update๐Ÿ”ฅ

The past couple of weeks have been busy for our recruits as they completed Hazmat Awareness and Operations training. They also learned about fire inspections and investigations.

A big part of the South Bend Fire Departmentโ€™s mission is public education. Today, recruits visited students at STARBASE and hosted a tour at Central Fire Station. They wrapped up the day by installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in residentsโ€™ homes.

When our firefighters saw a lemonade stand pop up outside of Station 2, they had to stop by. Their verdict? โ€œItโ€™s amazing.โ€๐Ÿ‹

If youโ€™re looking for a refreshing way to cool off this afternoon, stop by the stand on Lincoln Way West in front of Station 2 and support some hardworking young entrepreneurs!

Mavis stole everyoneโ€™s hearts at Station 3 โค๏ธ

Sheโ€™s a 7-month-old sweetheart who loved meeting our firefighters. She especially loved all the treats and belly rubs they gave her, and she didnโ€™t want to leave when it was time to go! Mavis is 22 pounds and full of curiosity, puppy energy, and lots of love.

Mavis was found as a stray and is currently living in a foster home, where sheโ€™s learning how to potty train. She gets along with other dogs and kids but would prefer a home without cats.

๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† | Around 10:45 p.m., crews were dispatched to a reported garage fire off the alley in between Huey and O'Brien streets. Upon arrival, crews found a fully involved detached garage. Crews began fire attack, but sagging overhead powerlines created additional hazards for firefighters. An adjacent garage was also compromised and began to smoke. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control without any reported injuries.

๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† | Just after 2:00 p.m., crews were called to the 1700 block of MacGregor Road for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the eaves of the home and confirmed a working fire. There were reports of dogs still inside the residence. One dog was able to exit on its own, and firefighters successfully rescued the second dog. The fire was quickly brought under control within 20 minutes. While the fire remains under investigation, investigators believe improperly discarded smoking materials may be the cause.

๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† | Just before 4:00 a.m., crews were called to the 500 block of S. Bendix Drive for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found brown smoke showing from the second floor of the home and confirmed a working fire. Crews quickly brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. Following the incident, a firefighter reported not feeling well and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

No residents were injured, and all three fires remain under investigation.
