Stop by and celebrate Fire Prevention Week with us from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. in downtown South Bend!

Tomorrow is First Fridays: Fall in Love with Downtown, presented by Kruggel Lawton CPAs! 🍂

Bring the whole crew downtown on Friday, October 2 from 5-9 PM, for a fall celebration! The South Bend Fire Department is rolling in for Touch a Truck, so little ones can climb aboard, meet our local firefighters, and see the trucks up close. Then wander Michigan Street, carve a pumpkin for FREE with Pumpkin Palooza by Chocolate Cafe - Downtown SB, and try seasonal specials from the downtown businesses that make this place feel like home.

Hockey season is almost here!

Today, our crews had the chance to train alongside Notre Dame Fire and Notre Dame Hockey team physicians and trainers at the Compton Family Ice Arena.

The joint training focused on preparing for potential injuries during the season, which gets underway Friday.

Did you happen to see vehicles being removed from the St. Joe River today? Just to clear up any confusion, these vehicles 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧 connected to a new incident.

Our crews are removing two vehicles from separate incidents that happened earlier this year. At the time of those incidents, both vehicles were confirmed to be free of occupants.

Crews had been waiting for the right water levels, current speed and weather conditions to safely complete the recoveries and minimize the risk to our divers and boat operators.

This recovery operation is a collaborative effort between SBFD and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, with members of both agencies working together to safely remove the vehicles

So, while you may be seeing crews out on the river today, this is recovery work from previous incidents and not a new emergency!

Cheddar stopped by Station 9 recently and had the best time! We’re pretty sure his tail didn’t stop wagging once🥹

This 2.5-year-old pup has been looking for his forever family since May and is currently enjoying life in a loving foster home. His foster mom says he’s just the best. He’s potty trained, crate trained, loves car rides and walks, enjoys playing with toys, and gives the best snuggles.

Cheddar does well with most other dogs but would need a cat-free home.

We’d love to see Cheddar find his family before the holidays. And the best part? His adoption fee is only $25 through Sept. 30!

Recently, Engine 9 responded after a recycling truck driver noticed smoke coming from her truck's hopper near the end of her route. The driver acted quickly, dumped the truck's contents into the street, and moved the vehicle a safe distance away.

Upon investigating, firefighters found the remains of a lithium-ion battery that had been improperly placed in a recycling bin. When the truck's contents were compacted, the battery was damaged and generated enough heat to ignite nearby materials.

This incident could have been much worse, but thanks to the quick actions of the driver, the fire was contained before it could spread to the truck or even the recycling facility.

𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥:
▪️Never place lithium-ion batteries in curbside recycling bins or household trash.
▪️Recycle batteries at approved battery collection or recycling locations. Need to find a location near you? Visit BatteryNetwork.org
▪️Damaged or swollen batteries should never be used.
▪️Always follow manufacturer guidelines for charging, storage, and disposal.
