August was another busy month for SBFD!

Our crews responded to 2,134 calls for service, including:

▪️1,505 EMS calls
▪️46 fire-related calls
▪️Remaining calls included public service, rescues, alarms and more.

Our crews also spent hours training, participating in community events, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout South Bend.

The South Bend Fire Department now has a portable ultrasound device!

The new device connects directly to a phone and gives our medics another tool to assess patients during medical emergencies.

The portable ultrasound can be used while enroute to the hospital, giving medics additional information about a patient’s condition that can be relayed to the hospital before arrival.

Just another tool to help give the best possible care to our patients.

Just after 4:30 Friday morning, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to the 1200 block of Fairington Circle at Fairington Apartments for a reported commercial structure fire.

When crews arrived and entered the building, they found smoke conditions on the second floor of a two-story apartment building and located a small fire in the bathroom of a second-floor unit.

Upon investigation, the fire appeared to have from originated from the bathroom exhaust fan and stayed contained to the area around the fan. Crews brought the fire under control within about 10 minutes.

The resident of the unit was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

No other injuries were reported, and no other apartment units were affected. Firefighters remained on scene to remove smoke from the rest of the building.

The fire remains under investigation.

This month, SBFD’s Swiftwater Team completed two-boat tether training on the St. Joseph River.

This advanced maneuver is designed for an extremely dangerous rescue scenario involving someone caught in the boil near a dam.

During the training, the front rescue boat is tethered to a safety boat positioned behind it. If the rescue boat gets in trouble or moves too close to the dam, the safety boat can quickly maneuver to pull it and the crew away from danger.

Just before 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1000 block of Lincoln Way West.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a small working fire on the first floor of a two-story, multi-family home. Crews immediately began fire attack and brought the fire under control within 10 minutes.

One resident was found outside the home with significant burn injuries. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital. A second resident was also transported to the hospital for observation.

The four remaining residents of the home were uninjured and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It may be National Dog Day, but we celebrate every week when a pup from South Bend Animal Resource Center stops by one of our fire stations!

Kimbo visited Station 7 this week, which is fitting since it’s nicknamed “The Dog House.” As you can see, he wasn’t too sure about the Dalmatians out front, but he warmed up to them pretty quickly!

Kimbo is 7 months old and is the sweetest little guy. He loves playing with toys, running around, and of course, plenty of scratches and cuddles.

Around 4:30 Tuesday morning, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial fire at the United States Post Office, 2417 Edison Road, after a postal worker called 911 to report a fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found black smoke and a small working fire. Crews began fire attack and brought the fire under control within 10 minutes. Firefighters then worked to remove smoke from the building.

The fire was determined to have originated in a light fixture in the mail sorting area, affecting two workstations.

Because the post office is a federal facility, any additional questions or inquiries regarding the building reopening should be directed to the United States Postal Service.

Just after 5:30 Sunday evening, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 2400 block of Poland Street.

Upon arrival, crews found flames and smoke showing from the home. The fire was primarily on the exterior but had spread through a window into the home. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 10 minutes.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Firefighters rescued three dogs and a cat from the residence.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
